NYC UNEMPLOYMENT LOWEST SINCE 1976

The NYC economy continues to do well. The latest evidence is the city's unemployment rate which now stands at 4.2%.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The state Department of Labor says New York City's unemployment rate has fallen to its lowest since the nation's bicentennial, while the statewide jobless rate is at its lowest in more than a decade.
The agency's monthly unemployment figures released Thursday showed the city's jobless rate had fallen from 4.3 percent in January to 4.2 percent in February, an all-time low based on records going back to 1976.
The statewide jobless rate dipped from 4.7 percent in January to 4.6 percent last month, the lowest level since July 2007, six months before the Great Recession began.

The Labor Department says the state's private-sector job count rose by 28,700 last month, bringing total employment to more than 8,151,000, the highest ever in New York.

When the city cries poverty during contract negotiations with city employees, don't believe a word they say.
However, if you (and I mean all of you), are not willing to get involved by doing something as simple as signing and spreading a petition around to get rid of the teacher evaluation system, then please stop complaining.

In this case the city will admit to false statistics. Mulgrew will agree to more givebacks for a decrease in salary.

Oh Hell yes! I double dog dare the UFT to try and say the city is broke when the new contract comes around. Mulgrew can take his poverty cry and his love of his shitty evaluation system and shove it where the sun don’t shine!

Buyout please, it would save the city 10s of millions.

Not for nothing but every 20 something I know, including my own son is out of work. They don't count people out of work for more than 6 months, do count part time work and minimum wage workers. The city can't have it both ways, though - they can't cry poverty and show stats like this. Mulgrew will have to pull his nose out of Bill's anus long enough to look at the stats to come to this conclusion.

They’re all jobs wiping old Baby Boomer’s butts from crappy pay.

Rumors of buyout for ATRs!!!

Why not offer a buyout to all?

Anonymous said...

No givebacks!

At this stage in my career, I don't care much about the money. I want peace of mind. 2 OBSERVATIONS AND AN END TO DANIELSON!

Buyout for all would be a law change. Obviously, rumors dont mean much? And the buyout would have to be much stronger than last year, a few months pay is nothing, especially when you lose the retro to take the buyout. And you would have to start your own medical right away.

There should be a 25/50 and out. Uniformed unions in NYC have a plan like that. Why not NYC teachers? Anyone have a deep understand of why???

Anonymous said...

Problem is, that doesnt help all ATRs. I only have 16 years. 50k plus retro plus a small yearly sum until we reach pension age or we start getting pension now.

1) I think that it stems from the fact that most uniformed services have situations where they work holidays nights etc . . .
2) While I would love 25 / 50, I would rather have parity in terms of disability. Out jobs have become much more physically demanding. \

Yeah, or treat my 16 years like 25 when I get to 55 years old. Maybe they will get lucky and I will die early.

Or a month per year worked. Again, we would be forfeiting retro so it still works hugely in the citys favor. There are many ways to make thos agreeable. The city should want to make the offer too good to be true more people take it, they save millions over the long run.

I can guarantee he can get work in a charter school.

Because you are making $118K. For those making 70K it's another world.

Another idiot comment on this blog.
Or de Blasio who is actually the mayor.

I am teaching 2 classes out of license. This is illegal. Why did my CL, who should be an expert, not stop this?

Anonymous said...

Most CLs only know how to avoid those seeking them out.

Anonymous said...

I’m not signing shit. I’ve been observed 25 times this year out of license in front of kids I don’t know as an ATR. Put up a petition to end the ATR pool and I’ll sign this crappy one. Four observations with your own classes, wtf are you complaining about?

Anonymous said...

Why didn't you stop it? A friend once described union work as standing up for people who won't stand up for themselves. Describes many readers here.

The teacher may not know the contract perfectly, may be new, may be unaware, its the job of the CL to defend us and know what is not allowed, and then stop it.

I made a flyer - will post it where ever i can.
it is disgusting that only 200 people signed so far....everyone complains but can't even sign a name.
thanks James!!!

Sorry, I’m not signing nothing because I don’t give a shit. I’m retiring soon and will take the money and run.

I did sign, and I quit as of June 26, 2018. Good luck but you have no chance in the DOE.

Saying stuff like that is awful karma. You sound miserable. Good riddance.

Randi Weingarten who marries Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum today at La Marina in NY City today (according to Vows Page in NY Times) always bought the city's report of fiscal stress when negotiations were being held. She was responsible for the TRS TDA Fixed Fund being reduced from 8.25 down to 7%. She reported that the CSA (Principals and Administrators Union) also wanted to follow suit but they never did. CSA members still enjoy 8.25% making thousands more than UFT members. Rabbi Kleinbaum identifies Randi as "She's one of the most significant labor leaders in America". Considering all the givebacks she agreed to with NY City, this statment is worrisome for union members today.

Student puts head fown in class, its my fault, typical DOE. Of course its not the fact that she is a 17 year old freshman...

The 8.25 to 7% drop costs a person hundreds of thousands of dollars, or more, depending on how much invested. Ive been maxing out, do the math, its huge...
