UFT Unity allowing the Mayor to lift NYC school mask mandates next week while less than 60% of kids are vaccinated and many staff are at increased risk is a moral and leadership failure. You’ve abandoned your members and our kids. Shame on you.

I will be very happy to go maskless in school and no longer have to show my health screening. I think this has been long overdue. Those of you who feel better wearing a mask, then continue to do so. I am sure that my school will have plenty of staff and students who still wear a mask.
Our union should immediately poll members on what they want, and then move according to the majority result. Of course, with current leadership, that type of democratic process will not happen. Another reason to vote them out this spring.
There is nobody saying you can't still wear your mask if you want. If you really think it protects you, it will still work. Personally I'm glad to be finally ditching these oxygen stealers.

Don’t look now—positivity rate was 1.65% yesterday and up to 1.93% today (Tuesday)—in New York State—not sure about NYC. But still—although its much lower compared to mid January—the number moved in the wrong direction—so don’t let your guard down. Use your common sense.

New York health officials released a preprint study showing the Pfizer vaccine does not prevent coronavirus infection as effectively in children ages 5 to 11 years as it does in older kids, teens, and adults. "However, vaccination of children 5-11 years was protective against severe disease and is recommended," the authors report. An immunologist tells the New York Times that because the data showed 12-year-olds got better results from the vaccine, and because older kids receive triple the dosage, "it would almost suggest that it's the dose that makes the difference. The question is how to fix that."
There were roughly as many Covid deaths yesterday as there were daily during April of 2020. The science and metrics haven’t changed. Only the politics have.

The kids are generally fine with COVID. We’ve known this since last summer. Annie freaking out about unvaxxed kids supposedly needing everyone in masks is absurd. She can triple mask all she wants. Most kids and parents want to breathe freely. We don’t need her to save the children by supporting mask or vaccine mandates.
There are perfectly valid reasons for NYC families to decline a largely unnecessary vaccine for their children.
If their children were obese or diabetic or 70 years old, that’s a different risk factor.
Informed consent requires weighing risks and benefits and not blindly following propaganda.

I don’t know what your students are like, but most of my HS students want to continue to wear masks in their classes.
And, for the record, I have never had a problem with a student not wearing one.
