UNITY WINS UFT ELECTION; UNITED FOR CHANGE WINS HIGH SCHOOLS AND TALLIES OPPOSITION RECORD 34%

This is from United for Change and Jonathan Halabi. It isn't official yet but we can pretty much figure these results won't change. Mulgrew wins but the opposition to my knowledge has never broken a third of the vote in what is a tilted playing field in UFT elections. United for Change will have representation on the UFT Executive Board as we won the high schools.

Totals: Remember retiree votes are capped at 23,500 so since 27,000 voted (more than half of the electorate), they are listed as a fraction.

United For Change - 15,094.15 (33.65%)

Unity - 29,761.64 (66.35%)

Retirees:

United for Change - 6837.15 (29.20%)

Unity - 16,580.64 (70.8%)

High Schools:

United for Change - 2508 (55.87%)

Unity - 1981 - (44.13%)

There were 293 who split their ballot and voted for individual candidates.

Middle Schools:

United for Change - 938 (43.83%)

Unity - 1202-(56.17%)

There were 157 split ballots

Elementary Schools:

United for Change- 2321 (32.1%)

Unity - 4728 (67.9%)

449 split their ballot.

Functionals:

United for Change - 2490 (32.1)

Unity - 5270 (67.9%)

1109 split their ballots

Good for UFC--much respect for standing up for change. If and when naysayers come chirping around ask them what did they do to try and fix the situation. I'm so proud of UFC. Way to go. No punks over there .

Now that Mulgrew won by a landslide, dues well spent, right?

Anonymous said...

The 75% who didn't vote, they have no cause to complain when they hate the next contract.

The 66% of the 25% who voted Unity also have no say when they retire and MulgrewCare 2.0 is relaunched.

The 33% of the 25% who voted United For Change, thank you for the being only conscientious voters out there!

James, I remember you said that if Unity wins you won't work against them in another election, but I hope you change your mind. I hate that Mulgrew is still the president, but it's for another 3 years. I think this election showed how far UFC has come. You guys are on the map as a force now. Three years from now might be when you all will get the win. You all did a great job!

Teachers top pay is 130K. A little per session and other things you can easily be at 140, 150K or more. Next contract? The way society is going this is a stunning salary! People are begging for civil service jobs! People on here need to be grateful!

James Eterno said...

I don't remember saying that but I do recall saying if we didn't win high schools, I was retiring from UFT politics.

First off 66% is not a landslide victory. This should send a big message to Mulgrew now that he knows that 1 out of 3 UFT members do not support him. It's a majority of high school teachers don't support him. Last election, Mulgrew got something like 85%. He is down 20 points. I don't understand either why people voted for him. How many teachers wanted the schools to close down during the Covid outbreaks yet Mulgrew did nothing? As for the person who said $140,000 is a good salary must be living in the nineties. I'm at top salary plus I make per-session and I have zip in my checking account right now due to my mortgage, groceries, gas prices, doctor visits, insurance, etc. etc. It might be a good salary if it weren't for this inflation.

@730 pm. Grateful? Aren't we earning our salary? What does grateful have to do with wanting better? Don't eat sh^t when steak is also an option. Come on now.

Now that the election is over, its time to get an investigation going of this very corrupt union. First off, without even digging into the other mountains of patronage power and filth, which entity can delve into the very lopsided way Unity controls the narrative in the election? Unity material is distributed by chapter leaders directly into the schools, District Reps do their morning meetings in the schools to talk up all the fabulous things that Unity does for the rank and file, Mulgrew refused to debate Eterno, online ballots are not permitted, requests for ballots ended a full week before the ballot deadline. The list is long. I noticed that Leroy Barr was solicited to allow UFC to be recognized as a caucus. Begging?

Bravo Camille Eterno et al.

Do you want to simply wait around another three years to take a swing in the playing field that is controlled by Unity?

An investigation must be conducted!

Thank you to you and your wife for trying to organize change. I appreciate your effort.
I am an elementary teacher who is disappointed at the sheer stupidity of the elementary teachers. You can lead sheep to water but you can't make them drink...they deserve what crap they get but unfortunately everyone else will suffer too.

Hear come crap raises, longer hours and more backroom deals. More Mulgrew saying crap is great.

I will remain...Disqusted in Queens

Please tell me this means HS DR’s can be replaced.
Some are great and some do major damage.
Or, because UNITY won overall, HS keeps them as is.

It is time to CLEAN THE VOTER ROLLS.
There is no way so many retirees voted....for mildew.

Anonymous said...

730 Paras don't even make half of that. And Unity refuses to change that. What should i be grateful for when Unity sees Paras as half as valuable as their colleagues?

Anonymous said...

1/3 of the vote was a good start. Mulgrew apologists can shove their gratitude. Don’t usually agree with Waiting4S on politics but sure do agree with her comment about the steak.

Anonymous said...

A win for Unity means the same old shit going forward. Do not expect a decent contract. Tell your fellow teachers who did not vote that they are the reason why we will continue to get screwed and more than likely will have to start paying for healthcare.

Anonymous said...

Paras are not half as valuable as their colleagues. They are 25% as valuable as their colleagues.

Anonymous said...

James, why is it that UFC won the high schools? What do you think is the root of that?

Anonymous said...

Once again, the elementary teachers screw us over. They have no clue what is going on and the elementary teachers pass everyone and every awful contract and just show that they don’t have a clue.

Remember it was elementary teachers who gave in to pressure for a parent teacher night?

Anonymous said...

Disappointing that you,James, do not post comments acknowledging that now is the time for an investigation. Investigation into the myriad questionable practices of the Unity caucus, including the tilting of the playing field in the election. Unity denied UFC equal time in all of the election campaign arena. This is NOT how an election with integrity is to be held.

Will Mulgrew shut down the NYHA again, and use his rhetoric that his members sacrificed higher wages for better health insurance, as he pushes Medicare eligible retirees into the for profit, pre-authorization, claim denial harmful twilight zone of Medicare Advantage?

Anonymous said...

James: is there a breakdown of the votes for Adult Ed? Thanks.

Anonymous said...

8:10 that is probably the Unity caucus line. " Paras are 25% as valuable as their colleagues. We fought for that, and we won!"

Anonymous said...

Elementary teacher here. I not only voted UFT but I also got the majority of my teachers to vote UFT as well. I think the main problem with elementary teachers is that there are a big number of them who are not planning on staying in the DOE for their entire careers. I have seen tons of teachers work a few years in elementary/DOE schools just to pad their resumes and then go teach in Westchester of Long Island. Many other elementary teachers have babies and never come back. Just my view of course.

Anonymous said...

Yeah we shitty elementary teachers ruin everything…. Along with 40% of those shitty high school teachers that voted for Mulgrew. And don’t get me started on those shitty middle school teachers. - Yours in Solidarity.

I voted for Mulgrew because he was there for the pandemic fighting for us as a group. And I do not know anyone who did not cash their checks during the pandemic when a lot of New Yorkers were screwed out of there jobs....Mulgrew held monthly phone meetings during the pandemic and this is when I truly heard the voice of Mulgrew who was being sincere for all of us.

Good question about why UFC won high schools. My guess is that the high schools are the most troubled. We're the ones who have endured all those useless programs e.g. Renewal. High schools are the ones most in danger of being closed. Also, most ATRs were from high schools. I guess most of the frustrated members are from high schools.

This retiree percent vote for Mulgrew sort of mirrors the 70% vote for Murphy last spring—which is surprisingly high -especially with the uncertainty with retiree Medicare Advantage.—that was supported by Mulgrew—until he decided not to support it for now.
But in general, it seems that retirees still have enough confidence with Mulgrew and don’t like change—and apparently lack trust with the UFC team.
People in general don’t like change when it comes to their union or political leaders—unless they are despicable**..
Mulgrew has no term limits and he can go and on forever. The same is true for some political offices. Cuomo would have run for a 4th term—but he screwed up with his alleged sexual escapades. Bloomberg would have won a 4th term, Obama a 3rd term, maybe even DeBlasio a 3rd term—if the election laws were changed.
**The main thing that makes Donald Trump so pissed off—is that there were basically a national referendum by both the popular and electoral vote on his behavior—that ousted him from office—and shortened his presidency—even as Republicans gained seats in the House.
Unfortunately, Biden although he is well respected—will face the same fate in a few years—especially if high inflation and the stock market continue to wreck the economy.

Anonymous said...

1:19: Really? That is poor reasoning. Cuomo gave us daily updates during the pandemic and so did Di Blassio and even Trump gave us updates. Would you vote for them again? Mulgrew was just doing his job.

Anon2323 said...

@1:19 is far gone unless very very sarcastic about Mulgrew fighting for us?? He should have been petrified for having 74 teachers blood on his hands for staying open bc of Diblasio .

@2:25 "Biden although he is well respected" WHATTTTTTT!???!! BY WHOM???? CHINA, RUSSIA, MIDDLE EAST?? LIBERAL FAKE MEDIA?..................... DUMMY! I DO AGREE RETIREES HATEEE CHANGE, THEY RATHER STICK WITH THE DEVIL THEY KNOW.

12:17 pm. So screw over others because it won't affect you. What a darling you are. And you teach elementary school children. They are lucky to have a selfless teacher. Eyes rolling deep into my head.

I know people who hadn't received ballots, requested ballots, and they never arrived.not to revisit election steals, but this is voter suppression.is there a way with all this, to insist on a remote via electronic voting?
People I know hate mulgrew and did not receive ballots after requesting them.they are disgusted.

Sure Anon 23–Rodney Dangerfield got more respect than the foolish Orange Clown. And Biden has not been respected by Trump since Nov. 6, 2020. So, if you prefer a dictator want to be—you could very well get him and all the revenge that he will do- if heavens forbid that clown ever gets back into office.
As for Mulgrew-will he be more attentive to the everyday classroom teacher and retiree issues—time will tell especially over the next several months with an expiring contract, Medicare Advantage and so on.

When I think of Joe Biden, Fuck Joe Biden is what comes to mind. When I think of Trump, He’s Better Than Biden is what comes to mind. Then I think of Ron DeSantis and smile.

When I read comments like 605, I think this society is caught in a downward spiral, just like a toilet.

waitingforsupport said...

@1213pm. Don't be dismayed. The fearful always grasp onto "perceived power" until they realize this power isn't truly power. In time, the truth always prevails. Desantis is playing to the mindset of the fearful. Trump opened the door and Desantis walked in. History has taught us that they can never hold on to anything.

UFC now has to wait 3 more years to see of they can switch 2/3?

Oh really if you voted for Biden, watch liberal media, believed russia hoax you are brainwashed sheep.

Trump was the dicator???? What are you smoking. The revenge from Trump has been coming, truth social is out, twitter is now another bullhorn, election fraud coming out, everyone sees the nazi mandates, food shortages, inflation etc

DeSantis is far more dangerous than Trump—because he has the experience to get laws passed.—as the Orange Clown only lived for the moment and had no real agenda—except for spotlight on himself at all his rallies.
But DeSantis can only go forward if he gets the blessing from Trump. It’s still about 2.5 years from the 2024 Fall Election—and a lot will happen—especially if Trump decides he really wants to run.
As for education, if DeSantis is elected —he will do everything possible to destroy public education and unions too. Come to think of it, Mulgrew has been slowly doing that same exact thing—over the past 12 years.

Jeff said...

Didn't Eric Adams say that 35% of black students in NYC are proficient? Public education is already destroyed, especially in the minority communities. Have you heard about grade fraud? How about students graduating unable to read and write? How about students passing classes with 15% attendance? That's with a dem president, mayor, governor, etc...And the left wing uft. But DeSantis...

Anonymous said...

I'm a high school teacher. I would take a lot more pride working in a school that has a 60% graduation rate where all 60% graduating reading and writing on grade level and who earned their diplomas than to work in a school with a 90% graduation rate where more than half the kids who graduate can't read or write on level or didn't earn their diplomas.

waitingforsupport said...

@834pm.... Me too. Heck 30% percent of PREPARED graduates is even ok. The system is broken

waitingforsupport said...

@jeff... do you really believe this started with Adams? Dems? I hope you're smarter than that

Anonymous said...

7:01 And we had a chance to fix it with the right wing in power, and their appointment of the very underqualified Betty DeVos as Education Secretary. Hahahah

@10:54 waitingforsupport: nope..I'd bet money jeff is not smarter than that. These dumbasses have no clue what it means for something to be institutionalized. They think it means being in a crazy house. But, but Biden.

waitingforsupport said...

@802am... it's astonishing how some scream and yell about liberal media BUT believes the liberal media when it ALWAYS show a certain hue of folks doing bad things. It is the belief of some of the anonymous posters that Trump is the all knowing "wizard" who will save them and Adams is the reason why teachers are giving fake grades to the students. And then with a straight f^cking face will say "the system isn't broken" . We have a lot of sleep walking sheep who are happily helping the butcher sharpen his tools. Are you picking up what I put down?

waitingforsupport said...

@802: lmho at "but but Biden" .

Having been ATR and rotated in the past, in my opinion, the elementary teachers care about the union the least.

You can understand it also. It’s a very cliquish environment, the teachers are all hoodwinked into working late and say they don’t mind and refer to the students as ‘my kids.’

There is little solidarity and it’s a very isolated environment, so you can see how contracts and working conditions are not looked at very much.

Plus, the young ones think they will get plucked by the suburbs(doesn’t happen unless your uncle is a superintendent. I’ve seen it happen), so they get burnt out and quit within 3 years bc there is no support from colleagues and admin.

In the older grades, there is better camaraderie. We talk about stuff that’s important and actually try to teach.

But, on the other hand, the elementary school teachers are handcuffed and do ridiculous programs and never stand up for themselves.

They will go to meetings on lunch and off the clock. I think this is why mulgrew won and why the next contract will suck.

Once again, the elementary teachers are to blame here in my mind for our system being not good

waitingforsupport said...

@621 am. Riiiight. Because you've spoken with ALL democrats. You're hallucinating.

Anonymous said...

Last few Democrat Presidents were handed a big stinking pile of shit when they took office and had to go into clean-up mode, while facing the obstructionist Republicans. Remember when Mitch said that his #1 Priority was making sure Obama failed? Bank crisis, and on the country on the brink of depresssion be damned. Trump is far, far worse than "a dick". "A dick" can be tolerated. He is despicable. A sociopath. A danger. And so are the rest of the "so-called" Republicans and anyone else who continues to support him.

Many decent Republicans and Conservatives left the party, and what remains are the ass-kissers, who are too terrified to take a stand for the good of the country, or the wackos who really should be institutionalized in an asylum. Which one are you?

waitingforsupport said...

@507 pm. I am a human being tired of the hatred. I don't make assumptions about people--I let folks show me who they are. I couldn't care less about your political view. I don't assume someone is good or bad based on whether they are dem or rep. I damn sure have zero tolerance for bullies and those who THINK they know about others simply based on who they vote for. Show me who you are by your deeds.

Anonymous said...

Well damn waitingforsupport. The question wasn't posed to be because I didn't assume you were a Republican. The question/comment was really for the person who said Trump is a "dick" but Democrats are worse. I wonder if I posted to the wrong thread because I don't see the original comment. Point being that Trump apologists try to minimize the threat that Trump poses by claiming that he's just a "loudmouth", or a "dick", or whatever.

But good for you that you wait for someone to show you their deeds. As for me, I absolutely care about someone's political views in this day and age, and voting for Republican IS showing me who they are by their deed. It wasn't always like that but today's Republicans at the highest levels of leadership have been overtaken by extremists, bigots, and racists. At the national level they won't even pass Voting Rights, and didn't vote to impeach Trump for Jan 6, which would have ensured he couldn't run again. You say you're tired of the hatred, well, vote Republican, vote for hatred.

waitingforsupport said...

@128am. No worries. I hear what you're saying. However the reason why I listen and watch a person's action is because I may be missing out on talking with a really cool person who happens to be a republican or Democrat. I just don't think ALL Republicans are bad or ALL Democrats are good and vice versa. The Republicans who won't pass Voting rights, are extremists, were voted in by like-minded folks. The Republicans sitting back and turning a blind eye to the destruction of the country simply because they don't care, don't have a problem with it or are too chicken sh^t scared to speak up are individuals who happen to be republican. There are Republicans who aren't blinded by fear and who have left the party. The same goes for Democrats. Some of their policies are way too liberal for me. Citizens have to vote in local state and federal elections. Do you see how they are going to school board meetings and raising hell, we need to do it too. Read some of the posts on this blog. There are so-called teachers on here bragging about faking it and passing kids. They don't care. Mulgrew one the election because people didn't vote and/or people don't have an issue with the services the union provides. We cant jump to the conclusion that ALL teachers don't have an issue with Mulgrew based on his winning. Assumptions are dangerous. But i ain't mad at ya lol. Stay safe
