COVID NUMBERS

Latest USA COVID-19 numbers from the NY Times:

Is this a lull before the next variant hits or is this truly a positive trend?

Before anyone says how bad a job Biden has done with COVID, it would be difficult to argue with you.

This is sobering.

This tweet kind of sums it up:

As for vaccines, I am no scientist by any means but the data below shows vaccines are holding up in keeping people alive and cases down but they were oversold as the be-all and end-all and vaccines ended up coming up short against the variants as there is waning immunity and too many people didn't take them. Again, I am not a scientist so my view is no more enlightened than anyone's but I can read numbers.

Update in Wednesday's Times on vaccines. Shots continue to keep people living and out of the hospital. (Full disclosure: I got a bivalent shot.)

Just my opinion but any mandatory mitigations would be useless now as so many people wouldn't follow them based on politics. The science is still evolving.

Back to my area of some expertise: You should know you can get time off on the DOE's dime if you need a booster and have a reaction or if you have COVID.

A bunch have covid in my school and nobody cares. While I love teaching and said I would stick it out in the DOE at least 8 years… here I am on my second year with DOE and searching for another job.. I worked charter for 5 years before going into the DOE..
The unprofessionalism of the leadership or administrative staff is toxic… many need psychology courses to learn how to deal with people and behaviors. A system full of structured chaos.
I’m wondering how people have dealt with this for sooo long… the chapter leader and the principal are in cahoots with each other… the system is failing both staff and students….
Such a sad space…

Thank you for the data.

Could it be argued that the pandemic is over because it is now more fitting to describe it as endemic i.e. a new normal?
I do agree, though, that Biden's comment was akin to George W. in front of the Mission Accomplished banner.

Regards to all.

In need of some advice. At this time in my life, I have saved up enough to go 6-7 months without a job. Each day this year ( starting my 5th year now ) is more dreadful than the previous day.
Despite my years in the system, I cannot justify remaining in the DOE any longer. Aside from a few Pros, there are many cons to working in the DOE. I love my school and admin, but I can definitely see myself doing less work for more pay in other fields. Not to mention the decrease in cortisol levels after leaving the DOE. With the six months off, I plan to study up on new skills ( technology ) to secure a job in the tech field or other blue collar work ( i.g electrician ).
It is my opinion that the DOE is a failing system. We are always at the mercy of unqualified leaders that wreak havoc on our salaries, pensions, teaching practices, etc. in the hopes of making a name for themselves.
What do you all think of me leaving and sending in a 30 day notice? For those that are also transitioning, can you please share some programs that I may look into? Thanks!

Just a sobering reminder that Covid is still out there. ABC News earlier today on its 6:30 news program —reported a 30% increase in Covid positives in the UK. Since it’s almost end of September—if past patterns persist—these same numbers should be in NYC by end of October to early November and eventually spread across the United States.

Here’s my bottom line. The medical/scientific “experts” in our institutions can no longer be trusted. They have lost all credibility. I’m done listening to any advice they give on COVID or new vaccines. I actively sought out the vaccine in early 2021. Then every move the authoritarians made to censor dissenting opinions and lie by omission or outright lies (Fauci fiasco on masks or gain of function research for example) made me stop trusting “the science.” I see the CDC, the NIH, HHS as nothing but political hacks in bed with Big Pharma. The drug pushers can find another user, I’m out.

Anonymous said...

Just my opinion, but the vaccine is not a vaccine. That’s where I feel fauci lost credibility in my eyes.

I’m vaccinated and had Covid twice since vaccination aka the shot and had mild cases. So, I feel it worked, but it’s not going to eradicate Covid like we were told it would by fauci

Thank you former President Trump for operation warp speed. Evolving science? The city fired hard working union workers based on evolving science and our union and some union factions that we pay thousands of dollars to protect us let it happen. Come on James. And thanks for censoring. Limiting free speech is not helpful to any true democracy. Can’t believe you once taught the bill of rights, astonishing!

Covid may indeed make a huge comeback this winter but DO NOT expect any changes. Schools will be open and kids/teachers will only need to quarantine for 5 days if they have it. The public will not tolerate another lockdown no matter how serious things get. Meanwhile, private sector workers will continue to work from home causing cities to further loose money to pay for essential services.

From early on in July 2021, we knew full well that the covid shots could not stop transmission of corona virus. At that time omicron wasn't even on the scene. We knew this because of the outbreak in Barnstable, Massachusetts amongst the highly vaccinated. Knowing that about the covid shot, they still went on to mandate the shot for teachers and fired teachers that didn't take it. Let me remind you that long before there was a vaccine, the vast majority of people that contracted covid did not, I repeat, did not end up with the severe illness or in the hospital. There was no good reason to mandate the shot under the penalty of termination. And it was the UFT that negotiated that penalty along with the city. The shot did nothing to stop the spread of covid in the schools last winter. They could not blame the unvaccinated educators though, cause we weren't there.

The numbers are grossly undercounted. According to the latest US numbers less than 100 million people have had Covid in the US. That means less than 1 in 3 people. If you ask around, you'll find that almost 90 percent of the population has had it by now. Also, I read somewhere that even though the count of deaths in the world from covid is 6 million, it is more like 15 million. Don't go by the numbers.

Anonymous said...

The will be a wave here, sure- no doubt. But what was the purpose of the mandatory vaccinations, if they only perpetuated the problem?problem? To think Scientificly here.
But why are you counting positive cases, and not the number of hospitalizations and deaths?
When did the number of cold or even flu cases mattered?

This blog is way too kind to brain challenged anti vax Republicans. Please put this part of the NY Times story out

"The most effective way to reduce Covid deaths, however, does not involve boosters. It involves persuading more unvaccinated Americans to get their first shot. Their risks are far higher than the risks facing the unboosted. Unfortunately, public health officials acknowledge that they don’t know how to increase that number very much. About four-fifths of the unvaccinated — a group that is disproportionately Republican — say they will “definitely not” get a shot, according to Kaiser."

"Covid remains so deadly largely because millions of Americans have decided they would rather accept its risks than receive a vaccine shot."

Media Bias Fact Check current NY Times piece rates it as high in terms of accuracy with left leaning.
"...they use credible sources such as law.cornell.edu, Financial Times, and The Washington Post. Story selection is typically balanced; however, wording tends to lean left in most cases. Editorials on the NYT almost always favor the left and sometimes are inaccurate; see failed fact checks below. The New York Times still qualifies for High Factual status due to the incredible amount of stories they publish, but the left-leaning bias has increased from the previous update."

James, did you know that if one goes to the Media Bias Fact Check with a specific news source and clicks "More Info", then at the bottom of that page one can vote that source either "Left", "center" or " right". Then the one can refresh that page, click "I am a human", and vote again? One can do that AS MANY TIMES as needed, and change the "bias".
How is that a reliable source for you? Why would anyone outsource their own thinking over this kind if a sham?

The endless bickering over Covid, the inane use of online sourced numbers, the political polarization . . .here . . .none of of it is constructive. We need solidarity and focus not polarizing one-upmanship.

We get 5 non CAR days off twice or 10 days off for two cases of Covid.

Is that enough? And, we can, if we have symptoms, take three no CAR days before a negative text and return to work. Do these three days count in the 10 total non CAR days off off the year? I think so but I'm not sure. It seems we get a maximum of 10 days.

Members had to take 5 days off if they were sick on day one. So they've used up 5. So these members have only 5 more for the year. Is this enough?

Covid is not over, not by a long shot, for teachers. Is this the best the UFT can get us?

Typically what you'll find in many of these studies is this false binary between the vaccinated and the unvaccinated. Now what I noticed is that the CDC, the FDA etc., will publish studies never distinguishing between the unvaccinated never have contracted covid and the unvaccinated having recovered from covid. In this way they have completely cast aside the reality of natural immunity. It's as if it natural immunity is some kind of controversial conspiracy theory. Most newspapers, like the NYT don't even question this, add a caveat, or any kind of disclaimer. What the effect of this is, I'm not completely sure, bit it has definitely led to what seems like a crusade against the unvaccinated resulting in many of the losing their livelihood. Now James. Come on, you don't have to have any kind of expertise to recognize the huge problem that some of this bad science and biased journalism causes. I'm not a Trump supporter or anti vaxxer, but this kind of stuff forms the basis for cries of "fake news". The NYT is not as trusted and reliable as they or anyone else claims.

An analysis of 26 major trials of ivermectin for covid-19 found that over one third had “serious errors or signs of potential fraud.” One prominent meta-analysis that suggested a large survival benefit from the drug was retracted.6 The authors did a re-analysis and found that the effect of ivermectin on survival that they had shown in their retracted study “was dependent on the inclusion of studies with a high risk of bias or potential medical fraud.”8 The editor of the American Journal of Therapeutics published an expression of concern about another high profile meta-analysis, noting suspicious data in several of the included studies and concluding that “exclusion of the suspicious data appears to invalidate the findings regarding ivermectin’s potential to decrease the mortality of covid-19 infection.”9

The UFT negotiated the year of leave with full medical. There was no negotiating the actual firing. For what it's worth, I was in favor of vaccine mandate at the time, but now it makes no sense. Nobody has any immunity left from the first two shots. So, the rule now should either be that boosters are mandatory, or that unvaccinated should be allowed back. I would vote for the latter.

People do have a right to question and debate and thats a wonderful about blogs. And it should be based upon reasoning. However, there are some here that disregard data and will believe only believe want they want to believe. The NY Times didn’t make up this data. The charts presented here are not fictional and are perfectly clear with no opinions, no distortions, no politics here—is just shows that vaccines do make a difference -with avoiding hospitalizations/death.
Just wondering if these same people would believe the NY Times if they presented crime data that showed big increases in crime across NYC—of course they would believe it -only because it’s what they want to believe-and it fits their political agenda. And just wondering if the NY Post reported that the crime rate was down in NYC in recent months—would they believe it? Probably not-for the same reason.
So who do you trust-just your own beliefs—or just make up your science and draw your own conclusions because I know better. Or just live in the Kyrie Irving world—in which the earth is not round and vaccines are not the answer. Or just live in the Donald Trump world of election data result deniers.

With the pandemic —at least Biden has been in the ballpark—he has tried—but unfortunately he has made some errors with his remarks —but he respects and appreciates his coaches and players. He is still playing, making an effort and hopefully will start being more reliable on the field. But the American public will be watching him closely.

As for Trump—he never showed up at the ballpark. Just about a total no show.
And of course , in his own warped mind he was thinking-
‘Oh, I’m there because in my own mind I just thought--I’m there’. He said whatever pooped into his mind such as ‘ We will defeat Covid and win the pennant by April 5, 2020.
Trump just continually undermined the work of his own coaches and players—his appointed pandemic team, scientists, doctors-even the Clorox people. He just acted like a total fool and deserved to be fired.

The bottom line— it’s not a very comfortable feeling that there are still over 400 people a day are being lost to Covid. Those numbers are not good and the unvaccinated are at greater risk.

Vaccines are not the answer, or at least not the whole answer. And they certainly are not the answer for everybody. Our president told us we were getting ready to have a pandemic of the unvaccinated. It, turns out last winter, with no unvaccinated teachers in school buildings the fully vaccinated and boosted were experiencing "breakthrough" infections. We all found out what had been true all along. These vaccines cannot prevent contraction of the virus nor can it prevent you from transmitting it. Yet still how do you justify it being not safe for the unvaccinated to be in school buildings. People lost their livelihoods. There is no justification for this. But some teachers are all right with these policies. Our union certainly was.

There was no court or judge that decided the correct course of action was to fire teachers. That came up in negotiations between the City and the UFT. The UFT was a participant not an innocent bystander.

Anonymous said...

Question, what would be the purpose of mandating a vaccine that cannot prevent transmission or contraction. What purpose would it serve? The president, the governor, the mayor, all up to date on boosters and vaccines. They still contracted corona virus.

Easy to understand, is official, was referenced by WSJ about 1.5 ago... They also mentioned access and alarming number of recent disabilities...

Correction:
There was NO court that ruled to fire unvaxxed teachers. If there were, then there would be a link here to the court's decision.
There was no uft negotiations either. Uft accepted the Arbitration from the arbitrator who was a known fundraiser for deboso. It is a fact. It is also a fact that the court found that Arbitration "Constitutionally suspect". I believe it was judge Walker 2nd circuit.

Is this your belief that "NY Times didn’t make up this data"?
By the way, they do not even need to make it up, all that is needed is a skillful interpretation. That is when you tell what is true, but you do not factor in what is important. Like counting every person who died "with covid" as "died from covid"
Who do we believe? I do see government agencies cover their tracks, but there are businesses that rely on health "signals" as indicators of the industry.
Look at the Life Insurance companies' reports of excess deaths, for one.

Scientific American. Can we please just end this debate right here? July 2022

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the link between politics and health became glaringly obvious. Democrat-leaning “blue” states were more likely to enact mask requirements and vaccine and social distancing mandates. Republican-leaning “red” states were much more resistant to health measures. The consequences of those differences emerged by the end of 2020, when rates of hospitalization and death from COVID rose in conservative counties and dropped in liberal ones. That divergence continued through 2021, when vaccines became widely available. And although the highly transmissible Omicron variant narrowed the gap in infection rates, hospitalization and death rates, which are dramatically reduced by vaccines, remain higher in Republican-leaning parts of the country.

Your Media Bias Review:

Scientific American is a popular science magazine and website covering general science, technology, health, psychology, the environment, and history. Information is properly sourced and does not use loaded language. Scientific American covers science through the consensus on GMOs and climate change. Editorially, Scientific American is not in favor of President Trump’s climate and deregulation stances. Evidenced by this: Scientific American slams Donald Trump’s anti-science rhetoric in a rare op-ed. In general, this is a pro-science source that has remained mostly neutral in politics throughout its history; however, in 2020, they state, “The evidence and the science show Donald Trump badly damaged the U.S. and its people—because he rejects evidence and science.” Therefore, this is a pro-science source that offers left-leaning opinions.

Well said @4:48. Our President blamed it on the unvaccinated. Not the case. Unvaxxed teachers were not in school buildings during the COVID outbreak in January. Who should we blame for that?

All along we were told to follow the science. Now that the CDC set new guidelines and announced that there is no difference between vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, we are not following the science. Teachers were still fired and so were many others. The UFT did not protect these teachers. No due process. What a DISGRACE!

Democrats outnumbered 2-3 to 1 in Republican counties and Democrats outnumber Republicans 2-3 to 1 in Democratic counties. It is a mere coincidence that they are dying in much bigger numbers in Republican counties. The mental gymnastics on Covid you have to do to survive could win a gold medal.

Anonymous said...

If my being vaccinated doesn’t prevent transmission then it’s nobody’s business whether I’m vaccinated or not. I can smoke and have unprotected sex too. None of your damn business.
Trump never said to inject disinfectant. Read the whole transcript. Context. I don’t idolize Trump. I just see through the propaganda lies. Didn’t believe Trump about COVID being gone by April 2020. When you can recognize propaganda you can recognize it from whatever source it comes from.
Fauci refuses to tell us if he or anyone else in his agency profited from big Pharma royalties. He said they’re not required to disclose such information. Yet some here still think we should take what Fauci and others say as gospel. Our media pundits are nothing more than propagandists.
If those in charge can’t sort out who died from COVID rather than with COVID why the hell are we even looking at numbers.
The UFT did not fight for its members. UNITY supporters can say it all they want. Those of us who know affected teachers know the truth. UFT and many members turned their backs on colleagues who were right all along about not wanting to risk a new vaccine that doesn’t act like a vaccine at all. So what do the authoritarians do? They change the definition of vaccine.
Media’s got too many lapping up every bullshit story they push. They have you convinced if you think critically and question democrat authority, big bad orange man will make a come back and then the world will end. In reality they want orange man back. They can’t stop talking about him because orange man drives their ratings. You msnbc, cnn watchers may hate orange man but you all sure tune in when he’s the topic. Ironically democrats are setting the stage for the return of orange man with every decision they make. I get my news from Breaking Points, Glenn Greenwald and Matt Taibi not cable news or any other mainstream media. I also check out Scott Adams, Jimmy Dore and Tucker Carlson to hear different perspectives but don’t consider their info as facts. For the love of God, please stop believing mainstream media. They’re no more in reality than the tooth fairy.

I just watched a TikTok on a UPS deliver in the Teamsters Union making over $110,000 a year and read an article on the 24% over 5 years the railroad workers received, which will bring salaries well over $150,000 and the total compensation average to over $200,000. The average NYPD officer at 20 years is making $147,099 which can be greatly increased with overtime and they can retire at 20/22 years.

I certainly do not fault these people one bit or their unions...and I have absolutely no hope for the UFT and as I am somewhere on my way to my third decade in this job it's hard to start elsewhere. I find great solace in stopping my UFT dues, I could not live with myself and pay for such an awful couple decades of losses, always being sold as a win or that's the best we could do.

The best message and lesson I can garner from this all is avoid teaching and tell the next generation the same thing, DO NOT be a teacher! This job requires way too much education, daily work and struggle with bureaucracy, administration and children, with no payoff. Now all these new people are on Tier 6, paying 5.75% of their salary to retire at 63 years old? WTF!

I am not sure I would have been happy as a railroad worker, an NYPD officer-I think I would have and you meet many of the same clients, I would go back and have done that and been retired now on a pension with the VAF(Variable Annuity Fund) that is higher than my salary now.

Please, please, please, tell you classes and all the kids in your life not to be a teacher! Do Not offer any of that BS...it's a calling and if you love it...

Mine was reported and my wife wasn't so stats are def lower than reality. Neither of us took anti-virals. The NY Health person said hold off pending symptoms and my personal doc went further -- don't take it until you feel you have to go to the hospital. The death stats for older unvaxed are important. The data doesn’t show how inept and unprepared this country is with its slow response in dealing with a public health crisis/emergency. There was no reason why over one million people have died with still more than 400 a day. The United States now has 40% of the world's monkey pox cases—why? Just a combination of politics, American exceptionalism and a plain distrust in government health officials and the media. Just plain sad and tragic.

PBS on Q for 7:17 although Q is well known but maybe you don't know.

[Donald Trump's] published dozens of recent Q-related posts, in contrast to 2020, when he claimed that while he didn't know much about QAnon, he couldn't disprove its conspiracy theory.

Pressed on QAnon theories that Trump allegedly is saving the nation from a satanic cult of child sex traffickers, he claimed ignorance but asked, "Is that supposed to be a bad thing?"

"If I can help save the world from problems, I'm willing to do it," Trump said.

Trump's recent postings have included images referring to himself as a martyr fighting criminals, psychopaths and the so-called deep state. In one now-deleted post from late August, he reposted a "q drop," one of the cryptic message board postings that QAnon supporters claim come from an anonymous government worker with top secret clearance.

From a recent NIH study on COVID vaccination and menstrual cycle:

https://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/study-confirms-link-between-covid-19-vaccination-temporary-increase-menstrual-cycle-length

The study’s principal investigator was Alison Edelman, M.D., M.P.H., of Oregon Health & Science University in Portland. It appears in the BMJ Medicine.

“These findings provide additional information for counseling women on what to expect after vaccination,” said Diana Bianchi, M.D., director of NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). “Changes following vaccination appear to be small, within the normal range of variation, and temporary.”

NICHD and NIH’s Office of Research on Women’s Health funded the study, which was part of $1.67 million awarded to five institutions to explore potential links between COVID-19 vaccination and menstrual changes.

A change in cycle length of less than eight days is considered within the normal range of variation. Although small menstrual changes may not be meaningful to health care professionals and researchers, the study authors wrote, perceived changes in a bodily function linked to fertility may be alarming to those experiencing it and could contribute to vaccine hesitancy.

On average, vaccinated people experienced an increase of less than one day in each cycle in which they were vaccinated: a .71 day increase after the first dose and a .56 day increase after the second dose. Participants who received both doses in a single cycle had a 3.91 day increase in cycle length. After vaccination, cycle length had increased by only .02 days for individuals who received one dose per cycle, and .85 days for individuals who received two doses in one cycle, compared to participants who were not vaccinated. Changes in cycle length did not differ according to the type of vaccine received.

Of the total, 1,342 participants experienced a change in cycle length of eight or more days, comprising 6.2% of vaccinated individuals and 5.0% of unvaccinated individuals.

I tried to cite a very red state South Carolina Health Department to give a consrrvative source but still people just make general statements that they don't trust the sources.

I made my point. The other side responded. I think it's time to move on.

We got more from the Times today on Red COVID.

When I last wrote about “red Covid” — the concentration of Covid deaths in conservative communities because of vaccine skepticism — almost eight months ago, I explained why the partisan gap could eventually shrink: Republican communities might have built up more natural immunity through previous infections, and treatments like Paxlovid were becoming more widely available.

This spring and summer, the gap did narrow somewhat. But it has begun growing again in the past two months, according to an analysis by my colleague Ashley Wu.

Government data shows that of the 20 states with the least Paxlovid use between late August and late September (per 100 diagnosed cases of Covid), 18 were won by Donald Trump in 2020."

"The shunning of Paxlovid seems to be part of a pattern in which Republican voters have wrongly dismissed Covid as little different from the flu. That mistake has had tragic consequences. A new study by three Yale University researchers found that the wide partisan gap in Covid deaths remained even after controlling for other factors, like age."

From that Yale study:

Political affiliation has emerged as a potential risk factor for COVID-19, amid evidence that Republican-leaning counties have had higher COVID-19 death rates than Democrat-leaning counties and evidence of a link between political party affiliation and vaccination views. This study constructs an individual-level dataset with political affiliation and excess death rates during the COVID-19 pandemic via a linkage of 2017 voter registration in Ohio and Florida to mortality data from 2018 to 2021. We estimate substantially higher excess death rates for registered Republicans when compared to registered Democrats, with almost all of the difference concentrated in the period after vaccines were widely available in our study states. Overall, the excess death rate for Republicans was 5.4 percentage points (pp), or 76%, higher than the excess death rate for Democrats. Post-vaccines, the excess death rate gap between Republicans and Democrats widened from 1.6 pp (22% of the Democrat excess death rate) to 10.4 pp (153% of the Democrat excess death rate). The gap in excess death rates between Republicans and Democrats is concentrated in counties with low vaccination rates and only materializes after vaccines became widely available.
