CARVALHO TURNS DOWN NYC CHANCELLOR JOB

Nothing should surprise us any longer in education. Today, Alberto Carvalho turned down the NYC Chancellor position. He decided to stay in Miami. He probably made a sound decision.

Mayor Bill de Blasio now is 0 for 2 on Chancellor picks with Carmen Farina and now the pro charter Carvalho. Maybe the mayor can get this right when he chooses a third time.

No dancing in the streets here as Farina probably stays longer.

He realized what a shit show NYCDOE is. Why deal with that headache? I just hope Bill does not get lazy and pick another DOE goon to fuck shit up even more.

This is or should be a big story. An acclaimed educator who rose from poverty declined a job running the largest school district in the United States AFTER he took the job. He has to have a reason. I really think he got a quick whiff of how dysfunctional and evil the DOE is that he simply hightailed it back to warmer and kinder territory.

Smart man, smart man...

The DOE is so corrupt.

I guess he spent last night watching NYC film classics like ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK and THE WARRIORS and he decided this city might not be the best place for him to settle down in.

Who really wants to work for the dope from park slope?

He might be able to hang for a couple of hours in the Boogie Down Bronx, but that is about it. Miami is his barrio.

This is clearly racist because he is European. Resist?

Too bad. Probably could have gotten a lot of snow days from a guy used to 80° winters

He had a Cubano sandwich near 52 Broadway with Mulgrew and the whole situation turned him off. He packed his bags in a flash and will never be back.

According to Alberto Carvalho, 1. he reduced administration by 58% in the first three months of him being superintendant, 2. eliminated those making over $200,000 a year, 3. did not renew 6,000 teacher contracts due to performance (teaching must be observable, measureable and accountable) - did not fire any teacher for economic reasons, 4. fired/demoted 64% of the principals in Miami Dade.

Depending on which speech you listen to from Alberto Carvalho, he fired fired 65%, 80% of principals.

De Blasio Tries to Scumbag Teachers and Got His Comeuppance

Have absolutely NO doubt that Alberto Carvalho was selected by de Blasio to institute a merit pay system, as he did in Miami, and to slaughter teachers in NYC!

Eva Moskowitz was overjoyed, Carvalho LOVES charters and has expanded them greatly there!

He would've been a very formidable force to fight against and for a variety of reasons would have certainly won the media and political fight against the UFT(he once taught physics, not shop like Mulgrew, and allegedly slept with reporters, not the ugly teacher down the hall).

There are candidates jumping for this job, but this pick was 100% an "I'm going to F*ck you over!" to us.

Also, have NO doubt that Alberto Carvalho had absolutely NO intention of ever taking the position! He scumbagged de Blasio to raise his political capital.

He is now championing himself as the messiah of Miami, sacrificing himself "for the children"- staying in his current cushy position and making 120k more there than he'd make here. He wants to rise-up in politics and this certainly raises his name recognition and supercharges his political capital there.

I say f*ck you de Blasio, just like Alberto Carvalho did!

I think he did this on purpose to make DeBlasio look bad. It wreaks of retaliation.

We dodged a bullet.

This story is just beginning. De Blasio just turned rat on us and he gut snubbed. He’s going to have to appoint Eva now. But, he’ll have to pay her more (now that she knows he can afford to)

Teachers don’t understand that this pick was a declaration of war against the UFT. The implementation of a two tiered merit pay system, firing 60% of principals who were NOT abusive, and firing nearly 25% of the teachers in 3 years for not meeting their student goals- that was his legacy in Miami and would’ve certainly been his goal here!

Wake the F up! De Blasio is spending his last years in office trying to create a national name at our expense and we are in trouble!

Thank God that the UFT got a seat at DeBlasio's table----it's really paying off for the dues paying membership. Can't wait to see the next pro-charter, public school teacher hater DeBlasio wants to hire to run our school system. Miami Supt definitely suckered DeB to bolster his credentials for future political office. DeB got the egg on his face that he deserves. Roseanne McCosh

At the stage in my career, I am getting paid well and don’t give a fuck about merit pay as long as the current longevity raises stay in place. I just wanna make it through the last part of my career laying low under the radar. What I do want is a new evaluation system in place so I won’t be stressed the hell out every day. So sad that it has come to this. I used to love teaching in NYC. Today it is burdon to overcome till retirement,

Carvalho is a snake. Did you see how he lied right in front of a live TV camera ?

He's a bold f ing con artist how he kept going in the back and then coming out and "kissing" panel members (eewwww what was that about).

This was f ing drama. For Bill.

WE DODGED A BULLET!

5:08 AM nails it right. Carvalho would've come in and cleaned house. That's his legacy in Florida - firing people. We would have seen massive turnover in NYC under this guy, especially with that APPR/ADVANCE evaluation system the UFT defends so much giving all that power to administrators to rate people "ineffective."

As to why Carvalho pulled out of the job, it most likely had to do with the sex scandal he was involved in back in 2008.

http://gawker.com/5054949/dont-shave-reporter-on-source-action-gone-wrong

I would bet one of my Danielson drive-bys that NYC reporters were on the phone to the woman on the other end of those Carvalho emails (who lost her job over the scandal while Carvalho got promoted) and Carvalho suddenly realized NYC scrutiny wasn't going to be good for him. Would bet too that there wasn't just one scandal lying in wait for NYC reporters to find. He also was cited for ethics violations back in 2016 for taking gifts.

We should be happy Carvalho couldn't withstand the #MeToo scrutiny, but also expect whomever de Blasio chooses next will be bad for us.

I get the sense that the best we can probably do is have somebody from the DOE elevated to chancellor, as Bloomberg did with Walcott. The list of "premier" educators around the country tend to be Broadies and ed deformers, so if de Blasio is able to sucker one of those people to take the job after the Carvalho fiasco (no done deal, given how bad this went down), we're probably looking at somebody who comes in and really shakes things up, and probably not in a good way for us.

Farina was so bad with her micromanagement via the superintendents, she had me longing for the days of Walcott. But Carvalho would've been so much worse that we would have been longing for the days of Farina after a year or two of that guy running Tweed.

Fact: Bill does not need to find a snake to clear out teachers in NYC. He can simply tell any chancellor he hires to do his dirty work. This is not rocket science folks.

ed notes online said...

He must have been watching the raucous PEP meeting Wed night which went on till 3 AM. As the evening began he was taking the job. Hours later he declined. The booing of Farina might have helped.

Awesome! Getting a sneak peek at the shithole that is the DOE management was just what he needed to see. 300 grand is not worth one day in this pit of misery.

Anonymous said...

What did we learn from this experience ?

They're looking for an AX MAN!!!

Anonymous said...

The UFT needs us more than ever because of Janus and we are going to need the UFT more than ever now that we can see that Bill is trying to fuck with us. How this all pans out, I have no idea. I do know for sure that merit pay would never fly in this city. Bloomberg wanted it but it never came to be. Any outsider who comes in is going to see what a crazy and messed up DOE we have. An insider knows how things work and would be able to mess with us easily.

If the mayor ends up picking some horrible chancellor I think it will be time to take to the streets and protest. "Not my chancellor" signs and the whole 9 yards. The parents of NYC are on our side and support us. We can see a hack chancellor from a mile away. This dude from Miami was picked to decimate the teachers of NYC. We are already miserable as hell and we are at a tipping point.

If you are so miserable, then get up and join together to fight back.

This is more proof that deBlasio is either incompetent or in bed with the privatisation crowd or both.

Anonymous said...

I think he is simply incompetent. I think he picked that guy from Chvallo simply because he was an illegal immigrant and a minority. Bill is the super liberal who wants to make everything look cool. I bet Bill did not even really know or care about the guys love of charter schools or his merit pay system. Bill does not care about the finances of NYC. He is a lame duck mayor right now. I predict he will pick another minority chancellor.

Anonymous said...

Just read the NY Daily News today. It says that he turned down the job because Bill would not let him pick his own heads of staff at the DOE including the head of human resources. That right there says it all. Whoever is gonna be the new chancellor will not have the capability to clear house at the DOE. The whipping will continue as scheduled.

To Anon 7:56
You are insulting everyone here when you try to pass along your manipulative nonsense. No, DeBlasio did not secretly select Caravahlo because he's an idiot.
And just because his wife chose a minority immigrant doesn't mean that he didn't ALSO pick an AX MAN!!!
Stop saying stupid things.

Anonymous said...

What Anon 9:55 says makes sense. They were not going to let him select his own heads of staff. Kind of sick if you think about it. Make $350,000 but can't pick your own staff.
Caravahlo was not culturally in sync with DOE culture. It was doomed. But he got pissed off enough to live stream some idiotic 5 hour meeting with high drama. So looks like he was insulted.
