WASHINGTON (AP) — A new plan from Senate Republicans to award businesses, schools, and universities sweeping exemptions from lawsuits arising from inadequate coronavirus safeguards is putting Republicans and Democrats at loggerheads as Congress reconvenes next week to negotiate another relief package.
The liability proposal, drafted by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and senior Republican John Cornyn of Texas, promises to shield employers when customers and workers are exposed to coronavirus by moving lawsuits to federal court and limiting legal liability to acts of “gross negligence or intentional misconduct,” according to a draft of the plan obtained by The Associated Press.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is firmly on the opposite side of the liability plan, pressing instead for emergency workplace regulations to protect paramedics, emergency medical personnel, and other health care workers at risk of exposure to COVID-19 in their workplace.
The $3.5 trillion House Democratic measure, passed two months ago, requires the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, to issue emergency temporary workplace COVID safety standards for employers immediately upon enactment of the bill. That’s a nonstarter with the GOP.
“They have resisted, in the past, any strong OSHA standard, and that is absolutely essential for us to have to protect our workers, at all times, but an even stronger one at the time of coronavirus,” Pelosi said on Thursday.

Thoughts? Yes. People should not get paid more money to stay home. The $600 extra should be stopped. Everything else should be handled by the uft, the strongest union in the country, right?
What immunity was involved on March 17-19? Oh. Did dems cuomo and de blasio help us? You just said dems are with us. Didnt we negotiate the worst contracts in history with dems? Has the nyc school system eroded under dems?
Mayor Lightfoot has shortcomings. I said Dems are with us here. The NY Dems clearly were not with us in March.
This liability shield would go back to last year and go through 2024 if I read this correctly.
How could it go back when people died?
When dems start admitting what's going on in this country, I will take them more seriously.

Republicans want to kill us by sending us back to school buildings during a pandemic and they want our heirs not to be able to sue for killing us. Democrats are bad but not this bad.

I still do not think NYC needs federal money.There is still plenty of Central fat that can be cut from the DOE budget. If we were to go remote until semester II, millions, possibly billions more can be saved; transportation, per session, building expenses, etc.
Would it be possible for the State DOE to suspend the PE and elective requirements(in high school)?
Can't side with a party that takes the side of looters, rioters and criminals, while beating on cops and innocent taxpayers.

I agree that both parties leave much to be desired and we have been critical of deBlasio and Cuomo here on many occasions but on relief bills, the Democratic Heroes Act is way better than anything McConnell or Trump are proposing.
As for a politician in a democracy who got coronavirus right, I would say Jacinda Ardern.
