BIDEN IN VICTORY SPEECH MENTIONS EDUCATION

I am cautiously optimistic about a Joe Biden presidency when it comes to education. What sets him apart from the average corporate Democrat is the influence of his wife Jill, a community college professor. President-Elect Biden did not disappoint teachers in his victory speech last night.

From a transcript.

Folks, as I said many times before, I’m Jill’s husband. And I would not be here without her love and tireless support. And my son Hunter and my daughter and all our grandchildren and their spouses and all our family. They are my heart. Jill is a military mom, an educator. She dedicated her life to education. Teaching is not just what she does, it’s who she is.

For American educators, it is a great day for y’all. You’re going to have one of your own in the White House. And Jill is going to make a great First Lady. I am so proud of her.

Education will not be a forgotten issue under Biden. No, he is not going to stop grade inflation. That is a local issue that we have to work on. However, I don't believe we will be "Arne Duncaned" again like we were by President Barack Obama. We may see better policy from the federal government on testing and evaluations. We also most likely will not be shortchanged on funding.

When was the last time a president improved things for nyc teacher. I’ve been teaching since Bill Clinton and don’t see anything positive coming down the pike for us because of who is in the White House.

LOL. So not students will have morals and ethics and show up and not disrespect teachers and there will be no grade fraud?

Jill Biden is, not was, a teacher.

From CBS:

President-Elect Joe Biden is projected to become the 46th president of the United States and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, plans to continue teaching, potentially becoming the only first lady to hold a paid job outside the White House.

Dr. Biden, a full-time English professor at Northern Virginia Community College, previously told "CBS Sunday Morning" in August that she would "love to" keep teaching if she became first lady after correspondent Rita Braver posed the question.

Referencing Kamala as first black woman VP last night, Biden said “you’re telling me it’s not possible in America??!!” - while at the same time insisting the entire country is systematically racist.

Anonymous said...

Can we do grade fraud too? Students don't even have to attend class to pass. High school students graduate unable to write a proper sentence. We haven't lowered the bar, we have eliminated the bar. Teachers, unfortunately, have submitted, given up and given in. If a student does one out of ten assignments it is considered good enough to pass the class. How sad for the students, mostly in the minority community. They then wonder why they can't get into a decent college or keep a decent job. Then the mayor calls it racism.

Great, since trump lost, w4s can now tell us why blacks lag in hs grad rate, college grad rate, and income while leading in prison population...And why it will be the same without trump and the same before trump. Can we fix it instead of blaming people?

Except for Jill's odd insistence on being referred to as Dr." (often a warning sign to those of us who deal with admins...especially when they are far from a school setting ), I think she'll be a good ally in the White House. She moved on from public high school teaching back in 1993 and has focused on community college instruction since then.

Trump lost, so did black people.

In 1977, Biden said without orderly integration, his kids would grow up in 'racial jungle'

He was against court-ordered busing to desegregate public schools.

“We should challenge students in these schools. We have this notion that somehow if you’re poor, you cannot do it. Poor kids are just as bright and just as talented as white kids.”

Let us move on and explain why some are always lagging.

Anonymous said...

Please move on, this is the fact, now move on.

In 2017, blacks represented 12% of the U.S. adult population but 33% of the sentenced prison population. Whites accounted for 64% of adults but 30% of prisoners. And while Hispanics represented 16% of the adult population, they accounted for 23% of inmates.

Anonymous said...

Please move on. Trump is the worst. Black American families have earned significantly less money than white families for decades. The median household income for a black family was $41,500 in 2018, 40% less than the $68,000 for a white family. This gap has remained relatively unchanged since 1967.

Anonymous said...

Before Trump was in office. In 2016, the median net worth of non-Hispanic white households was $143,600. The median net worth of Black households was $12,920.

Now, how do we fix this?

Anonymous said...

Those numbers are like that in a huge way because of systemic racism. You are making our point.

@2:30 "Prior to the coronavirus crisis, there had been a consistent downward trend in African-American unemployment under President Trump. Sorry w4s, bad news for your friends now that trump is gone."

WHY? Are we done with the coronavirus crisis? What's his plan for a safe reopening? Where's the money for that? How nice for Trump that he was able to ride Obama's coattails as long as he did. Inherited a healthy economy and drove it straight into the toilet, with no coherent plan to fix it, as soon as he was hit with a crisis.

I'm a democrat...Trump didnt start any wars, the economy was just fine before Covid and outperformed Europe after, the stock market’s at all time highs, our biggest Middle Eastern enemy is in deep trouble, Israel’s making peace left and right...Even on Covid, our numbers are indistinguishable from most of Europe.

Is the guy an insufferable jerk? Yep. That’s why he lost. But I am so tired of hearing how we barely escaped fascism. It’s nonsense, and the people spitting it are way more dangerous than
Trump.

That's the million dollar question. Way above my pay grade and most likely yours. Here are some suggestions:
First step: Vote out the jellyfish. Check
Second step: Review Revise and reissue US history and Global history. This time tell the truth and teach the truth bout everyone and everything. The good, the bad and the ugly.
Third: Review and revise public education in the USA. No more separate and unequal (for real this time). Challenging. Vocational. Unbiased. Psychological exams for educators (we all read the blog and know some folks are in the wrong profession.)
Just three suggestions but I'm just a teacher. No one cares what we think. Anywho. Did you have a nice weekend? The weather was beautiful and we got good news. Woo hoo.

Tom said...

@4:41 - you lose all credibility when you claim that the people accusing Trump of being a fascist (because HE IS) are more dangerous than he is. He has all the POWER of the military, of the Dept. of Justice, he threatened the folks at the National Weather Service if they didn't support his LIE about the hurricane. He's unhinged, and has demanded and threatened that his opponents, past and present be arrested and tried for treason - but the people accusing him are the threat? That's just asinine.

Anonymous said...

Trump lost mainly because of how he responded to Covid. Yes many people would have died, but he and his son took at as it's not a big deal. His rounding the corner excuse was getting old and he never pushed for masks but only said if you want to wear a mask, wear one if you don't want to, don't wear it. He also had nobody close to him die of it. He'll say that there are more cases now because of increased testing, but still there still shouldn't be over 100,000 new cases a day 9 months after the first case was discovered. If he took Covid more seriously, he could indeed have won this election.

Anonymous said...

I got it, Trump is the worst. That doesn't explain the black issues that have been going in for decades including while there was a black president. Why do they lag in every measurable? The only thing I keep hearing is racism and Geo disproved that. But if you *really* want an answer to your incoherent question about failure here is exhibit A: "Well, at least during work I can nap tomorrow, and work from bed when I wake for $130k. I did vote for Trump as an anti-Biden/Harris vote. It would have taken a miracle for Trump to win again. It was Trump vs. television shows, celebrities, sports figures, well funded liberal organizations, newspapers, radio news, programs and music, comedians, most news/opinion shows, magazine publications, internet publications, MSN, Google, Yahoo, Facebook, twitter, youtube, the corruption in DC, liberal politicians, teachers, professors, many Christian churches, and of course, himself. Who touted Trump's accomplishments: Fox news, a few radio programs, One America News, and himself. Very difficult odds no matter what you do.

I also think Biden/Harris were going to win no matter what. Any candidate would have won against Trump. No matter the number of votes needed to defeat Trump, they would have been found through fraudulent ballots, discounted ballots or software manipulation. The corruption in the voting process to assure a Trump loss in 2020 was set in place after 2016 when the American people were assured a Clinton victory.

This worries me more than a Biden/Harris presidency. Corruption should worry everyone whether it is local: the NYC DOE or Federal: everything.

Waiting for Support... Not for nothing but people like you never moved on when Trump won. You cried like a bunch of spoiled brats that didn't get their way, so don't you dare tell people to move on. Look in the mirror and self reflect on your pathetic behavior for the past 4 years.

At least we didn't declare a premature victory while the votes were still being counted. And then cry about fraud when the election was won fair and square. Just because the results aren't what you wanted, doesn't mean the whole thing was a fraud.

Oh, and by the way, most of you Trump supporters are quite aggressive yourselves. Today on my way to my car after work, a Trump supporter called me a f*cking Muslim and threw a cup of coffee on my car and drove off.

First of all, I'm not Muslim. Second of all, that is no way to talk to anyone or treat anyone. So, at least we don't throw nasty temper tantrums towards random people that don't fit your definition of "American" just because you're upset that things didn't go as you wanted.

I have actually had quite a few incidents where I was treated in a disgusting manner due to my ethnicity. And a majority of those folks were right-leaning or full on Trump supporters.

I actually had a supervisor in college at my campus job at a CUNY who I worked with for 2 years. After countless times of me explaining to her that I am not Arab or Muslim, she would keep addressing me as such when there really was no reason to even be discussing my ethnicity or religion on the job. She would say derogatory things about them. And yes, multiple coworkers filed complaints about her, but she knew an in and was able to stay in spite of those complaints. She was investigated by public safety but in the end, the other workers had to change their office room because she was quite passive aggressive. She would rip up the mail of her coworkers she didn't gel with (again due to ethnicity/religion), destroy their office supplies, and talk towards them in a hostile tone. And she was a proud Trump supporter.

So don't you dare tell people to look in the mirror and self reflect - you Trump supporters should be doing the same thing. A majority of you all are full of hate and anything that doesn't meet your definition of a true "American."

People always talk about how the left plays identity politics. Well, the right does the other extreme - they refuse to acknowledge your identity/ethnicity with the argument of true equality and equity, when really what is actually happening is that they are hiding the inequities by avoiding to address them head on.

Everyone wanted to bash on Black Lives Matter because they deemed it was unnecessary and a waste of time, that it is social justice reform nonsense.

After 9/11, so many people of my ethnicity died because they were misidentified as Muslims. The hate crimes still happen today. I stand behind any movement that supports fighting the injustices against people of color. The fact that those of my religion are still terrified to practice their religion in 2020 is ridiculous. Especially since America is known to be the land where one has the freedom to practice their religion without prosecution. Yet, uneducated idiots still go ahead and attack us. And again, most of these people are right leaning or full on Trump supporters.

And now that Trump lost, I am even more scared of hate crimes increasing due to frustrated Trump supporters releasing their anger. Has happened today and I just hope it doesn't get worse.

These issues exist. They do. COVID exists. It's real and I know friends and family who died from it. A mother who has left behind her two young children. A brother leaving behind his brother and kids. My own father barely made it through.

Just because racism and COVID and poverty are issues that you never encountered doesn't mean they don't exist. And that is exactly what Trump supporters and the right do - they pretend it doesn't exist. They choose to ignore it.
