NYSUT elects statewide officers, board members
As part of a special, abbreviated Representative Assembly Thursday evening, NYSUT delegates saw the re-election of three current statewide officers, and the election of a new second vice president. NYSUT President Andy Pallotta, Executive Vice President Jolene DiBrango and Secretary-Treasurer J. Philippe Abraham were re-elected to three-year terms. Ronald Gross, president of the William Floyd United Teachers, was elected NYSUT second vice president, replacing Paul Pecorale who didn’t seek re-election. All other uncontested board elections were also completed during a subsequent board meeting, and delegates will vote by mail in June.
A "democracy" without any opposition is usually something that has to be watched closely as it means there is no accountability.
I wonder what Paul Pecorale did to lose his position. You may recall President Karen Magee was moved to a different position in 2017 and Dick Iannuzzi was ousted in 2014 at NYSUT in a UFT power grab. It looks like Unity has their total control back at the state level in 2020.
There was fairly strong opposition in the UFT and NYSUT in 2014 before MORE decided to purge the non-idealogues. Two of the people who led the NYSUT opposition in 2014 by 2019 ended up running with Unity Caucus here at the UFT. One of them, Mike Schirtzer, along with Lauren Cohen (now Lauren Lumm) are amazing telling it like it is about the UFT in this video from 2014. As I see it, it's only gotten worse since that time.
Since the UFT didn't have to spend the money to send their 750 Delegates to vote as they're told at an actual live Representative Assembly, will anyone enquire about what they are doing with that savings?

The Chief had an interesting column by Marc Kagan about a long-time leader at Transit Worker's Union. Basically, it was a study of a union leader who, after the recent gains of the 1970's TWU, was a powerful advocate for the members. But, after 20 years in office away from the rank and file, and the "wins" fading from memory, "bargained away...seniority rights for a measly $1 an hour."
Many "leaders" follow this trajectory. We need term limits.
