A spokesperson for New York City’s largest charter network resigned in protest, stating she can no longer defend Success Academy’s “racist and abusive practices” that are “detrimental to the emotional well being” of its students.
I am resigning because I can no longer continue working for an organization that allows and rewards the systemic abuse of students, parents, and employees,” wrote Liz Baker, a Success spokesperson, in a resignation letter Tuesday.
“As the organization’s press associate, I no longer wish to defend Success Academy in response to any media inquiries,” she continued in the letter, which was obtained by Chalkbeat. “I do not believe that Success Academy has scholars’ best interests at heart, and I strongly believe that attending any Success Academy school is detrimental to the emotional wellbeing of children.”

In response to the mounting criticisms, the network’s CEO, Eva Moskowitz, held a series of town halls last week to address concerns. In her resignation letter, Baker said officials screened out critical questions from parents and employees.
“Questions deemed ‘too critical’ were rejected before they could be posted in the Live Q&A section visible to attendees,” Baker wrote.
Sounds like UFT Town Halls. Mulgrew and Eva both have people screen their questions.

So you say the uft does the same thing. And the uft allows a student free for all. Which is more acceptable?

Mayor Bill de Blasio warned that New York City may have to lay off 22,000 city workers as it tries to make $1 billion in cuts, with just days to go before a budget must be agreed upon.
“Unfortunately, now we have to talk about the last resort. The last resort would be layoffs and furloughs,” he said. “We are running out of options here. That is the blunt truth.”
“If we have to put a layoff plan in place, again, it would mean that other efforts to find savings from labor had not succeed, and it would mean we would not be getting the help that we had to from Albany or Washington,” de Blasio said.
Any such plan would take effect in the fall, giving the city some time “to work it out and avert it,” the mayor added.
“This is just the beginning of what will be a prolonged challenge in terms of both our economic situation and our budget situation,” he warned.
It's about friggin time. Good for her willingness to speak up and out.

So these idiots want to do the least possible and keep milking taxpayers. They want kids to go to school for 2 days a week and do online for 3 days a week. They'll split them into groups. 2 groups split the week and the 3rd group just stays home.
On one hand I love that it exposes what school actually is, a babysitting service.
On the other, if one group can just stay home and get the same "education" then so can the others.
Just move school to online.
It's vastly cheaper. No more useless teachers wasting our money enjoying their union protection. No more buses. No more wasteful buildings. No more overpaid board.

This plague has accelerated what would have eventually happened. On line schooling has been a hit for about ten years with kids who are bullied, have short tempers or are antisocial. That pretty much sums up this whole generation. @2:58 is correct. If Covid is back in the fall and budgets are cut, it will be the death knoll for public education in NYC.

We need the uft now? What about when they negotiated the 2014 contract? You all forget quickly what goes on every day.
Some kids just don't do well in school. It's an archaic and antiquated system not to mention the thuggery, bullies and drugs the good kids have to deal with on a daily basis. I'm also homeschooling and not because of any child brilliance but for all the other good reasons.

With the coronavirus siphoning as much as $9 billion in tax revenue from New York City, Mr. de Blasio said on Wednesday that the city might have to lay off or furlough 22,000 municipal workers this fall.
The Charter Schools are out in the tax-exempt bond market bringing in money. We need money too. As noted here several times money is cheap, rates are low and there is a huge appetite for bonds. In the short term, the only way we can dig out of this financial hole in NYC and in NY state is to go to the capital markets and borrow. The state can do it and it is considering giving the city the authority to do it too. And it should. While every commentator out there will remind us of what happened to the city in the 70s, we are not living in the 70s. We won't end up like Detroit. we are not Illinois. NY State and NYC are very good credits, even in an induced coma depression, we are very good credits and can raise the money in a flash.
Later, we can raise taxes on the wealthy. Put on Ralph Nader's proposal to tax stock transfers.
But right now we need a movement of workers that tells the mayor and governor to use the debt markets to get us through this emergency. We are not in a depression because of poor budgeting or financial malfeasance. We are in a self induced coma depression and, while we won't simply snap out of it, next year will be, if not a V recovery, a major reversal.
We have a double shock, supply and demand, an unusual monster for us in the US, but more common in developing nations. The last thing you do when facing shocks is cut spending and workers. It will only make matters worse. We will get a protracted depression.

The usual suspects here would much rather teach in conditions like Success - rigid discipline, the ability to throw out kids, open racism, no union so no dues. Hey, they have a 50% turnover rate - go ahead and make our day.
