The upcoming UFT election in the spring of 2022 holds the best chance of opposition making significant gains. If United for Change runs a good election campaign, the close to 60 year one party Unity Caucus rule could be in jeopardy among the teachers at all three divisions (high school, middle school, elementary school). Michael Mulgrew is vulnerable.
Add to this the retirees are angry over uncertainty about their healthcare being switched to Medicare (Dis) Advantage.
UFT Solidarity (part of United for Change) is hosting two December get togethers. You are invited.
Please observe COVID-19 precautions.

PLEASE make a United for Change flyer that we can print and share at our schools! It needs to let staff know who they are and what they stand for. Key is to get the newbies to vote.
UFT Solidarity can not win without massive support from retirees.
UFT Solidarity must reach out to the retirees and clearly explain Mulgrew's betrayal
of the retirees with his Medicare Advantage scheme.
After the election, Mulgrew will feel free to throw the UFT retirees under the bus again.
Mulgrew is unworthy; he must be removed from the UFT.
If UFC won, do you think the new Prez would fire the whole uft staff? DRs, Special reps, dept heads, borough reps? What say you, James? A bloodbath?
The systemic corruption of the UFT Unity faction makes it imperative that they lose the next election.
Is there a cover charge for this UFC event? I’m on the fence about going,
Dear Anonymous @ 6:58pm,
Speaking for myself, though you asked the question of James...
I do not hope for, nor do I foresee United for Change engaging in a wholesale purge of UFT appointees should they miraculously win not only the divisional Exec Board seats, but also the union presidency and officer positions. First of all, many people who work for the UFT are experienced, full-time, administrative professionals who keep the lights on and do the hard day-to-day work of running a bureaucratic organization. Those people are loved and needed! Others are part-time employees who do the grinding retail work of helping membership by directing inquiries, answering questions, and providing guidance in all the areas of service unionism, from certification to pensions. Secondly, there are many dedicated and competent UFT members-employees-appointees who help and protect their fellow union members regardless of their own, or others, caucus affiliation. Our union needs and depends upon those people!
However, I do hope and expect that United for Change will make structural, democratic changes within the UFT that will eliminate patronage appointments, end caucus favoritism, allow for proportional representation (or end the caucus system altogether), restore elected District and Borough Representatives, democratize the Delegate Assembly, stand up to City and State politicians, make rational political endorsements, spend our COPE dollars in accordance with membership's needs, actively organize and respond to chapter membership, and engage in open and transparent negotiations with the City regarding contracts, safety, and healthcare.
Despite what some may think, or what Unity would have us believe, United for Change is not the Taliban. United for Change is pro-Union, pro-active, and pro-democratic (with a small "d").
The retirees sent a clear message to Murphy/Mulgrew with a 20 plus point drop in the 2921 RTC election—but still not enough—because Mulgrew seems to spin any kind of BS for any given situation. Who knows -maybe this retiree healthcare matter—could be the turning point with the Spring 2022 elections.
In any event, it is simply not in the best interests of any democratic labor union to have one group with one person at the top for such a long period of time.
What's happening with Spring Break pay? WHat happened at the elementary town hall last week? I did not receive a copy of the recording or any notes about it
The UFC cannot fire people who are effective even if Unity. I'm not going to name those who are well respected because that would get them in trouble with Mulgrew. There are district reps who are good. But they would probably need to get elected. But if I were a staffer I would not be so quick to attack the opposition on spurious grounds.
Seems like they would have to keep the staff for a while to preserve institutional memory. Reduce salaries to force retirements, then replace with UFC people. Would new Prez force all DRs to face district election. Most would be reelected.
I’m a retiree who knows full well that Mulgrew is stabbing us with an Advantage plan. I’m willing to vote for another caucus as long as that caucus doesn’t sound like a bunch of social justice identity politics Marxist shite. I’m not yet convinced they won’t.
I would hope that a new prez would fire the entire corrupt Unity staff on day one. They are not helping members. They are just collecting paychecks. Have new DR elections right away. Drain the sewer.
I like my DR.She has helped me. Also a previous DR stood up to a former Principal who didn't honor her word.
As far as the batching liberal crap mentioned in the previous post, I agree except UFT seems like it is that already, or at least on the way to it. I don't suggest doing away with them all.many are good.Mulgrew, for starters should go.Maybe a new leader can pull the other ones in line.i would hate to see another patronage mill.or more rotten price.
Remember:politics = poly tics, aka many bloodsuckers.
It's December.... arbitration still open? Crickets......
Bennett, I agree with the vision you put forth, overall. There are indeed hard-working, expert professionals that help with the day to day operations of our union that serve us well and tirelessly. United For Change will be ready with a leadership team, on day one to hit the road running, that will work with these committed folks to trailblaze a better union that is accountable, responsive, transparent, and more democratic.
We can forge a better path without the patronage and privilege for only a select few. A union that places its members, first.
Together, we have the combined experience of thousands of years. And as NYC"S SMARTEST we have the greatest minds collectively to reimagine our future as the UFT.
The hegemony comes to an end this spring. And we do the work together.
Any discussion about vaccine in NYC?
Black New Yorkers aged 18-44 have a 28% vaccination rate.
Are you saying 72% of young, black New Yorkers are far-right?
Bill de Blasio
Is it unfortunate that so many on the far-right are hostile to the idea that vaccines work? Yes. Yes it is.
Is that going to stop me from taking action from keeping our communities safer? Not a chance.
Claudette Bush, the mother of JonL Bush, a school aide at Carnegie School of @ChiPubSchools who was fully vaccinated & died of COVID that likely was contracted at school: "He's dead on something that could have been prevented." Carnegie's had 19 cases in 14 days.
What is the definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and expecting different result. Keep voting for these dem idiotic policies. The UFT elections are tilted very much rigged how will this change?
Diblasio is finished and this sick fu@@ mandate vaccines for kids. Flu is going around , omg 1-2% might have covid way more get the flu.
I’ve already asked this question with no answer. Who is on the UFC slate? Who will be running for president & VP’s??
reach out to retirees that he UFT is selling out
