CITIZENS BUDGET COMMISSION OFFICIAL PREDICTS TOUGH CITY BUDGETS AHEAD

Labor contracts are up for most city workers this year. Based on history, that means the city will soon cry poverty and claim there are troubled city fiscal times ahead.

A Citizens Budget Commission official, Ana Champeny, is projecting a $9 billion shortfall by 2026 if nothing is done. While it is encouraging that Champeny admits that the city is currently in good financial shape with federal COVID relief money still coming in, she is hoping that the city will use some of this extra funding to replenish the depleted labor reserve.

Here is what she says about the next round of collective bargaining for city employees:

[T]he city should use this next round of collective bargaining contracts to further increase productivity, which would generate savings to fund raises and stabilize the budget. Almost all city employees will be working under expired contracts by the end of the year. The tight job market and high inflation may increase municipal unions’ demands. Raises totaling 3% annually would cost about $1.5 billion in the first year, increasing to $4.3 billion in the third year.

Three 3% raises are considered generous by the Citizens Budget Commission official. I don't think those kinds of increases, which don't come close to keeping up with inflation currently running at 8.5% nationally and 5.1% locally, would please too many folks who read this blog. Just understand this is what we are up against. Adams may offer much less.

  • Are UFTers willing to accept a lower increase if we get some of our rights back which won't cost the city any extra money?
  • What are members willing to do collectively to achieve higher increases in pay?
These are the conversations that should be taking place in the schools but will not be encouraged as long as Michael Mulgrew and Unity remain in charge of the Union.

Don't forget to vote for United for Change and just as importantly, tell every UFT member you know to vote UfC so we can take a very different approach to the fight for a decent contract.

Call 800 218-5524 on Monday between 9AM and 5PM if you still have not received a ballot or if someone you know hasn't gotten one or may have thrown it out. There is still time to vote and get out the vote. I will be continuing to get in touch with the UFTers I know to try to convince them to vote UFC.

Tough budgets are ahead for UFT members who vote for Mulgrew.

Meaning, Mulgrew will side with NY city finance and agree to 1% annual pay increase while inflation roars away at above 8%.

If you don't understand inflation, you are probably a young teacher
living at home with your parents for the next 15 or 20 years.
Good luck with that and good luck voting for Mulgrew.

Mulgrew is ready too screw you again. Actually, you are shooting yourselves financially by voting for Mulgrew.

Citizens Budget Commission is surely a misnomer. Go to CBCNY.com and review the list of their operatives. Wealthy, those who represent them, banking, construction, law firms, and a few from mayor's circle. I'm betting precious few with any recognition of the lives of students, teachers, and parents who actually live, learn, and work here.

1246 sounds pretty dumb. First of all, which union is going first in the next round of contract negotiations. They will set the pattern and the city is iron bound when it comes to the pattern. If you want to trash Mulgrew, criticism of the last contract is most justified since he set the pattern. And I suppose Camille will waltz in and get the city to break the pattern. It's just magical thinking. I'm not sure what your comment about young teachers is supposed to mean. It's nonsensical. Why wouldn't they know what inflation is just because they haven't experienced it first hand?

And since you're such a tough guy, let me ask you flat out. Are you willing to walk the picket line? My experience is that trash talkers like you are the first to scab when the going gets hot.

That is why we quoted the Citizens Budget Commission. We want to emphasize what we are up against. 2:49. It won't be easy.

I want to share that my entire high school chapter is proudly voting for United for Change (UFC). We are united as a chapter and the newbies (who are voting for the very first time) brought in their ballots to have them explained and then voted. They tore off the front page, placed the first page in the Secret Ballot envelope and then in the outer envelope. I personally collected them to make sure they were in the mail by Spring Break. James, you must continue this blog even if UFC doesn’t win. My chapter cares because of people like you and Camille, and everyone running on the UFC ticket. You promote union engagement and that is hugely important. Look at what is going on in our country right now. Employees of Amazon and Starbucks are voting to form unions. Active union voices like yours, James, is the key to union engagement. If not this election, then the next. We can do this together!
Vote United for Change (UFC) so we can all have a voice, TODAY and TOMORROW.
A Vote for UFC is a vote for a truly united and viable UNION.

I want like to amend my prior post, that if we don’t win this time, we will win next time. UFC must win this time and that is what my chapter and I are fighting for, and voting for. We want to get the word out to our union brothers and sisters in other schools.
VOTE UFC. THE TIME FOR CHANGE IS NOW.

My entire chapter has decided that the only reasonable thing to do is to vote for whomever wfs is voting against. We are incognito but not anonymous.

where is all the money in the bank? I thought NYC had a savings of 6 billion?

miserable management of money. The feds flushed NYC with more billions than we all can count yet now they want to play this money game again. Is there ever harmony in the city? Must we always battle and fight with each other to justify compensation for the jobs we do?

This really gets old in that its the same ole game played

Question: Why does the union never try to create a higher salary differential? Long island schools have MA +45, MA +60 and such. Seems like something that can bring in some money to the city for the classes, and benefit us as well.

9:40: That will never happen. Noway is the DOE dishing out more money to teachers. They probably regret giving us the Masters +30 differential.

I use the MTA and the contractor the D OE uses to provide the transit check is very old school. Apparently they can't get their act together and offer a tax pay card. I've called the head of transit benefits for the DOE and the provider Ended. They've been saying for over a year that it'll be coming soon. In the meantime doe employees are not eligible to receive free rides after their 13th tap! Members request the card to save money, but DOE incompetence means members get the exact opposite at this time.

@7:18 pm. Lmho...power to me. I'm voting for all Republicans too. See ya at the polls. Bring your sheep with you.

5:33 - Congratulations. You've rented space in someone's head and they're so delusional they think their "whole chapter" is with them. Total goofball you've got stalking you.

Democrat President with Democrat Congress.

Democrat Governor with Democrat NY state legislature in Albany.

Democrat Mayor with liberal NYC Council.

and we may only get 3% raises???

if UFT can not get more money for us, how about some non-monetary take backs.

1. restore S/U ratings - no more Danielson, MOSL, MOTP
2. right to grieve ratings, see #1
3. 6 hour 20 minute day - drop the extra half hour that was a bait and switch years ago
4. restore Seniority rights to transfer
5. restore 8.25% fixed rate on TDA

time for a change.

I like 2-5, but be careful with the S/U rating. One letter in your file could result in a U for the year. It is a lot harder to get ineffective than to get a U.

@553... seems like i control them and their entire chapter. This simpleton is a fan of mine.

It was great that the UFC was the first box on the first page. Hopefully many uft members just check the first box since so many have not been educated on how important it is to get rid of this president. I actually think he's worse than Trump, never thought I would ever say something like that.

I'm waiting over 30 years for a proposal that went nowhere:allowing buyback for time worked in private schools pre DOE.

Leftists and their name calling. Thanks for the invite into the playground, libtard dummies who smell bad and groom children. Yay this is fun. Your turn.

Love #3. I agree….be careful with s/u . A nutty admin can have a field day with that. I would totally love something like giving teachers 2-3 vacation days a year (on top of the ten we have for other things). We can use those 2-3 days as we see fit no questions asked. Just like the 7 days that we were given.

8:08 "groom children". Oh look everyone, a Marjorie Taylor regurgitating idiot has stopped by. Hahaha "@ leftists and their name calling", and then "libtard dummies". Too bad we're not as high minded like you, eh? What a dolt. You're incognito, anonymous, AND irrelevant.
