SHOULD THE UFT HAVE OPEN BARGAINING OR SHOULD BARGAINING REMAIN UNDER THE CONE OF SILENCE?

Another poll was conducted on a DOE private Facebook group. The person who put out the poll emailed the results to us. It is not scientific but 392-43 were for open bargaining for the UFT. That is 90% who want to bargain openly so all UFTers know what is going on.

What do you think?

The huge majority is similar to an earlier poll that showed 98% want presidential candidates Michael Mulgrew and Camille Eterno to debate.

Open bargaining is now a trend in labor negotiations. Here is something from activist Leonie Haimson on the topic:

As usual, the UFT is behind the times. Mulgrew-Unity wants to keep bargaining under the Cone of Silence.

For the younger readers:

Vote United for Change for open bargaining for the next UFT Contract. You will be kept informed every step of the way.

Camille will open it up.

If UFC wins, what will happen to the current negotiating committee do you think?

It won't be 95% Unity.

The problem is two fold: 1) People think the 400 person volunteer negotiation committee actually works one on one with the mayor and his legal team. 2) People don't know that what really happens is that Mulgrew meets privately with the mayor and reports back to the committee but we don't know what is actually being discussed or how the dealing is going because Mulgrew is under no obligation to tell the truth about what is going on. What the poll on Facebook is really about is that we want Mulgrew to be 100% honest with us about what the city is demanding and we want to know exactly what Mulgrew is demanding in return. Thus, we need to be filled in on what is going on behind closed doors and what sellouts Mulgrew is giving away without our input or voice.

Open bargaining , closed bargaining or even no bargaining at all—wont make a difference because unfortunately the bulk of the UFT membership will just do whatever Mulgrew, Weingarten or any other past UFT president recommends when ratifying a contract. All active and retired members have to send a message—to get Mulgrew out after 12 years. Time for new leadership and no more of the same old thing.
Just remember the 2005 Weingarten and Mulgrew 2014 contract were an absolute embarrassment and disaster for several thousand senior members (creation of an ATR status) and the ridiculous wait time for retro for all members —and yet they both passed with flying colors. The 2018 MLC Healthcare negotiations led by Mulgrew—strictly behind closed doors—was just plain inexcusable and unforgivable -for retirees. And heaven knows whats lies ahead for active UFT members with an expiring 2022 contact in the fall.

UFT members MUST get rid of Mulgrew or we will continue to suffer at the next contract. We need to make up for erosion of wages due to inflation. Mulgrew will help NY city cheat you. Mulgrew is a liar and cheat.

Our last contracts kept pace with inflation, so 456 is wrong. Inflation has been very low except for college costs and medical costs, for years.

Howevet @ 456 is right about getting rid of Mulgrew.

A former writer for New York Teacher, Jim Callaghan, said that he personally witnessed Mulgrew deleting hundreds of emails without having read them. Can anyone clue us in as to what type of response they had received, and from whom, after having emailed Mulgrew regarding a concern?

Mulgrew is a dictator and we allow it, 12 years in power? 60% plus women in this union, weak.

The dummies here who voted for Biden and stay as silent as a leaked fart make me sick.

15% inflation, how will our next contract even come close to make up for this crap. Build back better my ass, european globalist BS slogan.

Hunter Biden laptop is real shhhhhhhhh because its not Trump's kids. We cannot speak about 3.5 million mayor of moscow gave, or shady business dealings that has this RESIDENT compromised.

Not every UFTer makes the same wage. Americans have been severely underpaid since the 70's. Our contracts have not kept up with inflation or productivity. Consider our horrifically underpaid Paraprofessionals, counselors, Speech Therapists, OTs, PTs. We are the underclass of the UFT and Unity/Mulgrew hasn't done shit to change that.

@821... I'm not sure about speech therapists, PTs and OTs but school counselors earn more than classroom teachers.

Jim Callahan, notorious lush, fired for drunkenness, carrier of huge anti uft resentment, is also a liar and fabulist. To boot, why would Mulgrew delete emails in his presence? All his emails are read by his assistant and referred to relevant staffers for action. Some he deals with himself.

1000 more yearly. Pay schedules are posted

Anonymous said...

The only reason Guidance counselors make more is because they work more days per year than teachers. Their last day of school is always a few days after we end and they have to report a few days before we do. They really only get an extra week's pay.

waitingforsupport said...

Yes. GCs work 2 extra days in june. However they start the same time in September. My point is that they don't make LESS than classroom teachers. Their hourly rate is also higher i believe.

What about forgoing a raise in favor of getting vacation days each year? That could do wonders for mental health. Maybe something like four days a year that can be taken at any time without question? If you don’t use them, they roll over you can take them at retirement?

Anonymous said...

6:52-Yes, they do work 2 extra days at the end of the year BUT they work less hours than teachers.

they do NOT have to work late on Mondays and Tuesdays. If they do work late they get paid
per session.

SO they make more than us AND work less hours than us. 2-6:50 min days is far less than
2 hours 35 min extra we do.

We have many service providers that are underpaid. Paraprofessionals make half of what teachers/GC's make. This is not right. And here, in NYC, it barely affords a person a 1br. They are not half as valuable and they deserve a large pay raise.

School Counselors possess a Master Degree from programs that require 60 credits for graduation and certification. To earn top salary, the counselors must complete 30 additional hours above the MS degree, making this 90 credits post bachelor's, in order to get to the far end of the salary chart.

Arguing about which UFT group is the bigger victim. Yeah. You guys will never get your shit together enough to oust Unity. Mulgrew aint going anywhere. Sigh. And re Jim Callahan. Drunks tell the truth.

Anonymous said...

Do you really think Mulgrew would delete 100's of emails? And would he do it in the presence of Jim Callahan? Does this story pass the credibility test even slightly? Mulgrew has an asst who manages his email. He doesn't delete anything. Put this story to bed Callahan is a liar.

Agreed @9:33am

@11:35 am. ..it's not an argument. We are clarifying and enlightening. It's ok. Adults do this sometimes. Relax

“They make more than us” sounds like resentment not clarity. Word play all you want. The opposition will lose because of er um ahem ahem… clarity. Take a chill pill.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like pay disparity being addressed and discussed... words that Unity caucus wouldn't even dare speak.

waitingforsupport said...

@5:35 am. It sounds like resentment TO YOU. It sounds like they were trying to be informative to MEEEEE.

Anonymous said...

No?!? A poster’s words expressed that poster’s opinion. Thanks for clearing that up. Down with Mulgrew AND down with the leftists in ufc…. Just to be clear.

1129am. You're welcome. Always happy to help.

I’d love to hear more stories about Mulgrew and emails addressed directly to him and emails that were copied to him. The stories which I’ve heard to date are mostly of the “No Answer Received” variety. Let’s hear from people who received meaningful assistance or information and from those who were ignored.

I would never email Mulgrew directly unless it was a matter of a very serious nature, and if it was that serious I'd prefer to speak to an attorney. Y'all really think he should personally respond to every little grievance you have. It's silly.
