UNVACCINATED, UNMASKED TEACHER INFECTED MAJORITY OF CLASS WITH COVID

It is difficult to understand why anyone is still debating mandated vaccines and masks in schools.

This is from CNN:

(CNN)An unvaccinated elementary school teacher who took off their mask to read to students ended up infecting more than half of them last May -- and they went on to infect other students, family members and community members, California public health officials reported Friday.

It's a prime example of how easy it is to undermine efforts to protect children too young to be vaccinated, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said.

The teacher came to work even though they had Covid-19 symptoms and then took off their mask to read to the young students, a team at Marin County Public Health reported in the CDC's weekly report on death and disease. The teacher assumed the symptoms indicated allergies, not infection, the investigators found.

There were 193,000 new COVID-19 cases yesterday in the United States and 1,756 more deaths. Can we concede that we are doing something wrong yet? School opening has already been a disaster in the South. NYC needs a remote option.

"About 29% of students in the West Ada School District have been excused from the district’s mask requirement.

Char Jackson, the district’s chief communication officer, told the Idaho Statesman as of about 2 p.m. Friday that 11,685 opt-out forms had been submitted.

West Ada, Idaho’s largest school district, has more than 40,300 students, Jackson said.

The district has been collecting the forms over the past three days, after trustees on Tuesday night approved a new reopening plan mandating masks for students and staff, but giving parents the option to opt out their kids."

Am i missing something??people walk around maskless yet demand that others vaccinate?i got into it yet again.im weary of this fight against people who refuse to wear masks.they pray for relief from this.but then bring on the disease.if everyone would mask, it would help out.i do not want to breathe their nasty air.i go to a diff grocery line or bank line, etc.i do not feel sorry except that their brains are already fried.

'Trump's rhetoric hurting vaccination efforts isn't limited to his specific commentary on Covid-19 and the vaccine. His entire presidency was devoted to the idea that The Establishment couldn’t be trusted, undermining the ability of mainstream media, health professionals and scientists to educate his base about Covid-19. In other words, Trump’s meager attempts to suggest the vaccine might be worth trying is overshadowed by his systematic efforts to sow mistrust in anyone outside of his political cohort.

This problem is unlikely to go away, and not just because Trump is afraid of the monster he’s helped create. Those who want to operate in the Trump lane in 2024 like Govs. Ron DeSantis and Kristi Noem are showing that they want to continue Trump’s tradition — decrying commonsense public health measures as a betrayal of conservatism and a surefire way to generate more attention for a White House run."

But we can just open the window, right? And even a vaccinated teacher can infect others, so not sure your point.

We’re all getting this eventually. Bet ya $5. I’m not making light of it. I just think that’s how it will play out. Hopefully most will survive it. The political swamp didn’t need Trump to sow mistrust. You have it all wrong about the majority of Trump voters. Trump was elected because of the mistrust already there. Fuck Trump, Biden, Obama, 2 Bushes and a Clinton. The mistrust has been around for a long time.

If parents opt their kids out of masks and their kids get sick, yes i feel sorry foe the child.but that parent set that up.almost abusive, deliberately sending someone into a situation and tempting fate...like so many di in bars, in florida parties.they did that early on without regard to older and infirm.parents knowingly send their kids to school with covid should find another place to educate their kid, like homeschool.it happened twice in my old school.
i think the society is sick.not only the government.looking at florida, how can parents let their kids run around without a mask everywhere and then claom they want mandates when they dont follow rules.

I have a question, 1:31 But first, a few comments... Living rent - free in your mind still, and in the minds of so many of you on this blog, Donald J. Trump. I am a right wing teacher who agrees with the vaccine mandate just as surely as if the DOE were a privately-owned enterprise. (I'll pause a brief moment for all you liberals gasping at the phrase "privately- owned.") It's really hard to stop laughing at your "undermining the ability of the mainstream media" line. Outside your echo chamber on the left, the mainstream media is a joke, even to the apolitical. But here is my legit question--- No one on this blog needs to be told that Trump has/had little support among families in the five boroughs. You can't blame Trump for the unvaccinated here in NYC. You can talk until you are democrat blue in the face about Trump rhetoric, but the unvaccinated population in New York City is not tuning in to America One, FOX, or "the great one" Mark Levin on 770AM radio. When they go online they'll find no love for Trump-- So my legit question to you is this: What's the real reason behind the lack of support for the vaccine among so many? I find your explanation simply not believable.

Sweden went the natural immunity route, as opposed to Israel, which went for vaccine immunity.

Of the total 23,978 cases of those currently infected with Covid-19, only 39, or 0.2%, are in serious or critical condition.

23,939, or 99.8%, are mild.

Nearly 5x better than Israel.

WOW just WOW to 1:31:00 PM
Its Trumps fault??????
Did you just steal the worst POTUS's excuse for everything that's going wrong.
Unless I am wrong but our country was built on the idea that the government must be watched as you cannot always trust them. If we didn't question things and how the government was mistreating us we may never have had the Revolutionary War and broken away from the British mistreatment.
Or should I listen to your VP Harris who stated she wouldn't take the vaccine if Trump was the one telling the country to take it.
Seems the opposite of your narrative is true as if you think if you keep repeating stuff over and over it makes it true.

and i say this ironically...

Maybe if that class had the "gold standard" in prevention like in NYC the virus would have not spread.

Gold standard = open up all your classroom windows even in winter and even when the windows only open up an inch or two and wait for a breeze AND
social distance 3 or 6 ft but if you cannot like a lot of schools then don't worry about it AND students should wear masks but if they don't want to there will be no repercussions of punishment in any form. unless its the teacher who will probably be disciplined for trying to get the kid to wear the mask.

Anonymous said...

My takeaway from this is schools, parents of students and governments failure to acknowledge that many teachers are parents too and without an option to work from home, limited sick days(which many teachers use when their own kids get sick) teachers will be coming to work sick. WHY? Because teachers will need to also use their sick days when their own children are quarantined.

What is the plan or I assume there is not one for teachers who will not be able to teach remotely because(there is no remote option because it's best for the children")
if a teacher's child is quarantined?

Last year if an in person teachers kids were quarantined they were able to have another adult be with their class in person and zoom into their own classroom. This year this cannot happen.

Many teachers have small children and do not want to ask grandparents to watch their quarantined children for obvious risk of exposure.

What is the plan for these situations? Our union is supposed to put UNION PAYING MEMBERS NEEDS FIRST BEFORE ANYONE ELSE AND THEY DO NOT.

This is going to blow up and be a mess. You can force teachers to come in, risk exposure but teachers are not going to leave their own small children home alone when their day care or classrooms close due to exposure.

Dum, dum MIke and Debozo, and Porter.

Porter speaks about her 1 high school vax eligible child and Deblozio speaks about his ADULT CHILDREN and what they would want for them.

They continue to deny the needs of educators with young children who will need to be cared for my parents because they are actually still children and cannot stay home alone like Porters 16 or 17 year old child.

NOT LOOKING TO DEBATE WITH THE CHILDLESS POPULATION. I HAVE CHILDREN. I PLAN TO USE ALL MY SAVED SICK DAYS BUT THIS DOES NOT HELP THE OTHER TEACHERS WHO WILL BE PULLED TO COVER MY CLASS WHEN I USE MY SICK DAYS TO CARE FOR MY OWN CHILDREN WHEN THEY ARE REQUIRED TO QUARINTEED.

POOR PLANNING BY OUR JOKE LEADERS and NO SUPPORT AND PROTECTION FROM SHITHEAD MULGREW.

326 a class analysis helps here. the working poor have a fear of lost time from a reaction to the vaccine which may cause them to be ill for a few days. lost time is something a majority of the population cannot afford. access has also not been strong in all neighborhoods, which means traveling, and again comes down to lost time. the working poor also tend to have more distrust in government, and the health care system. this would include pharmaceutical companies.

Nope, nope Trump's not living in my head at all, but James did ask a specific question: "It is difficult to understand why anyone is still debating mandated vaccines and masks in schools."

Whatever Harris said or didn't say, I doubt Republicans are using her as a source for vaccine hesitancy. My post which actually comes from an article, also says this "This problem is unlikely to go away, and not just because Trump is afraid of the monster he’s helped create. Those who want to operate in the Trump lane in 2024 like Govs. Ron DeSantis and Kristi Noem are showing that they want to continue Trump’s tradition — decrying commonsense public health measures as a betrayal of conservatism and a surefire way to generate more attention for a White House run." so it's certainly relevant to the James' question unlike 4:37's hysterics about the Revolutionary War.

You then said "What's the real reason behind the lack of support for the vaccine among so many? I find your explanation simply not believable.". So you asked and answered your own question. Brilliant!

Lastly, there are other threads where Trump cultists keep bringing him up as if they have Trump Derangement Syndrome, so I figured, WHY NOT. It's relevant to the question, and it will probably trigger the troll.

The Washington Post disagrees with you that it's anyone other than (primarily) Republicans that are opposing the vaccine and mask mandates, even in NY. I think I'll take their word over yours.

"In New York City, there are more unvaccinated White people than Black people, despite the difference in vaccination rates."

"Black Americans are only slightly more hesitant than Whites to get vaccinated, according to the Kaiser survey. (Whites make up two-thirds of those who say they won’t get vaccinated, according to the survey.) But that group of White adults includes a lot of White Republicans. Compared with White Democrats, there’s a bigger disparity."

"Of course, that Black Americans are more hesitant about being vaccinated than White Democrats in particular doesn’t really help the argument that Black hesitation rates should be compared unfavorably with Republicans. It’s also disingenuous to compare Black and White vaccination rates overall, since White rates are actually higher in part because so many White people are Democrats! Those making this comparison are essentially using high vaccination support among White Democrats as a way to disparage lower rates among Black people."

"That suggests that the question of access is important. In February, NPR mapped vaccine distribution sites, finding that more-White neighborhoods often had better access"

"In other words, the reasons that low vaccination rates among Black Americans are not somehow a counterpoint to low vaccination rates among Republicans are as follows:

Black people are much less likely than Republicans to say that they refuse to be vaccinated.
There are about four times as many Republicans as Black people in the ranks of the unvaccinated and a slightly higher proportion of Republicans among those who say they won’t get vaccinated.
Vaccination rates among Black Americans also reflect structural problems that often overlap with income.

"Trying to rebut a largely partisan opposition to vaccination by blaming a historically disadvantaged group as the real problem without actually exhibiting any curiosity about the distinctions is not a real testament to intellectual rigor."

That's all fine, but our students are pretty much 100% minority, which means their families are too, which means they are around many more people who are unvaccinated, which would then be brought into our schools. Vaccinatd people can still get covid and pass it, which means our nearly 100% minority population would then get it while being unvaccinated and pass it to others at home who are unvaccinated.
Comparing % is like me saying white people commit as much crime as black people when, if the numbers are equal, means the numbers are still disproportionate because of population.

"These are typically held in case of a mass casualty event for example, when a large number of bodies appear at one time. This is actually a situation that is happening in Alabama hospitals now," Harris said.

"We have enough people dying that there is no room to put these bodies," he added. "We are really in a crisis situation. I don't know how much longer we're going to be able to do this."

@3:32 how about you answer "What's the real reason behind the lack of support for the vaccine among so many?"

Anonymous said...

Real reasons people won't vaccinate (details for each provided in the link):

Reason 1: Lack of access, real or perceived

Reason 2: Covid-19 isn’t seen as a threat

Reason 3: Vaccine side effects

Reason 4: Lack of trust in the vaccines

Reason 5: Lack of trust in institutions

Reason 6: A variety of conspiracy theories

A common theme

"All of the reasons people provide for not getting vaccinated, from lack of access to conspiracy theories, share a common theme: A significant portion of Americans don’t believe the vaccines are worth the potential downsides.

Everything officials and experts are now doing to vaccinate more Americans is in effect meant to beat back this theme. Better access would mitigate a major downside. Incentives could push the vaccine over the top, making it worth the downsides. Mandates could too.

If all of this is successful, the country could truly defeat Covid-19. But if enough people believe the downsides are still too bad, the threat of the virus could lurk for years to come."

@8:08 100% minority in NYC schools?? That's ridiculous. You don't think NYC schools has any white students? Your argument is still faulty because a high percentage of NYC students are hispanic and they are currently vaccinating in higher numbers than whites.

Asian - 72%
Latino - 46%
Black - 32%
White 43%

But you responded to this:

"Black people are much less likely than Republicans to say that they refuse to be vaccinated.
There are about four times as many Republicans as Black people in the ranks of the unvaccinated and a slightly higher proportion of Republicans among those who say they won’t get vaccinated.

The question asked was, what are some reasons people don't vaccinate. I know how desperate you all are to make it a black/brown thing to try and take attention away from Republican hesitancy (and the white vaccination rates include a high percentage of Democrats). According to this, it's not that blacks don't want to get vaccinated, or are spewing conspiracy theories, digging their heels in saying they won't vaccinate.

Believe it or not, recently leaked documents from Pfizer reveal that at least 20 percent of its employees have chosen not to receive the jab.

Far from facing termination, these employees can choose to remain uninjected, decline to declare their injection status, OR seek a medical or religious accommodation. Pfizer will require these individuals to participate in regular COVID-19 PCR testing, but the glaring hypocrisy remains:

People who work for the very company making and profiting off this novel drug are not required to take it under threat of termination, whereas millions of other Americans are.

And it’s not just Pfizer. It’s also been alleged that Johnson and Johnson and Moderna either do not mandate these experimental drugs, or require routine PCR testing as an alternative.

There are 1,094,138 students in the NYC school system, the largest school district in the United States. Of those students:

Race or ethnicity:
40.8% Hispanic
24.7% black
16.5% Asian
14.8% white

138,648 are in charter schools

Percentage of those fully vaccinated are:

46% Hispanic
39% Black
74% Asian
72% (Native American)
47% White

The 47% number of whites includes many liberals/Democrats, so the argument that it is simply blacks/minority students that are the cause of so many unvaccinated students is simply NOT TRUE.

When a mandate is imposed, it gets almost everyone to get on board.

Houston Methodist, which has said it was the nation’s first health system to impose a coronavirus vaccination mandate when the policy was announced in March, faced protests from some staffers — including more than 150 who refused to get vaccinated and left the organization. But 97 percent of Houston Methodist workers complied, with about 2 percent obtaining exemptions or deferrals. A federal judge also dismissed a lawsuit filed by former staff members, ruling that Houston Methodist was “trying to do their business of saving lives without giving [patients] the covid-19 virus.”

Emanuel said the University of Pennsylvania Health System, which imposed its own coronavirus vaccination mandate two months ago, also has seen a similar uptake in shots.

“The sky didn’t fall,” Emanuel said. “When we do it, and we have a good justification, people respond.”

Gilead Sciences will also require all U.S. employees and contractors to be fully vaccinated. Its policy will take effect on October 1, the company said Monday, adding that the mandate will only be in place where legal and where vaccines are “readily available.” The company forged its policy after tracking the rise of COVID-19 cases in the U.S. and abroad, as well as analyzing the data available on the vaccines’ power to curb infections, hospitalizations and deaths.

Gilead says it polled its employees “extensively” on the issue and plans to accommodate staffers who can’t get a vaccine on medical or religious grounds. In places where vaccine mandates aren’t legal, the antiviral specialist says it will “strongly recommend” employees get the shot.

As for Pfizer, the company is also requiring all U.S. staffers and contractors get vaccinated or undergo regular weekly testing, a company spokesperson told Fierce Pharma. The company is “strongly encouraging” vaccinations for all ex-U.S. employees who can get one, she added.

Like Gilead, Pfizer says it will work with employees toward an alternative solution if they have medical or religious objections to the shot. That’s also in line with COVID-19 antibody developer Eli Lilly, which will require all of its employees in the U.S. and Puerto Rico to get vaccinated by Nov. 15.

Johnson & Johnson has similarly matched those moves, requiring all of its U.S.-based employees and contractors to be fully vaccinated by Oct. 4. The single-shot vaccine developer says accommodations could be made for people with medical conditions or other reasons to not be vaccinated.

3:04 AM,

The DOE is 80+% minority, right?
The largest % of unvaccinated would be black, right?
Not sure what your argument is.
808 said nearly 100% minority, 80+ is close to 100.
Are these not factual numbers?

As far as schools go,
Teens 13-17
Asian-88% vaccinated
Blacks-22% vaccinated

I bet that some of those with the loudest arguments for "liberty", "freedom", are the same one who excoriate "others" when they are harassed, and killed for not respecting authority for the umpteenth time. I know, that's different, this is inside the body, because of course, only their excuses and reasons matter, even though this has to do with public health.

When you look at the minority that ARE vaccinated, which includes blacks, hispanics, and asians, and the white LIBERALS, it still points to a Republican problem. It is Republicans who are desperately trying to make it a white/black thing because they can't even stand on their own convictions.

During the CNN teachers debate, the best the anti-mandate person could come up with is that they should have a remote option while given the chance to educate themselves, so that at some point, when the cows come home, they can come back on their own accord. As if. They think they're fooling someone with that one? Utterly ridiculous!

Listen to some of the folks talk and the fact of the matter is, they don't like the students they're teaching, and they don't like the parents. It would make them so happy to not have to be anywhere near them while they sit at home collecting their paycheck. It WAS a nice break last year being out of the classroom not dealing with the noise in the hallways, the attitudes, and all the rest. The break is OVER.

These are the geniuses we are dealing with. Business Insider is the source:

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves, in remarks Saturday, said that people in the state were "less scared" of COVID-19 because they believe in "eternal life," as new infections reach record levels and hospitalizations spike.

Reeves made the remarks to a gathering of state Republicans at a fundraiser last Thursday in Eads, reported the Daily Memphian.

"I'm often asked by some of my friends on the other side of the aisle about COVID … and why does it seem like folks in Mississippi and maybe in the Mid-South are a little less scared, shall we say," Reeves said.

When you believe in eternal life - when you believe that living on this earth is but a blip on the screen, then you don't have to be so scared of things," he said.

Reeves went on to say, "God also tells us to take necessary precautions. And we all have opportunities and abilities to do that and we should all do that. I encourage everyone to do so."

Mississippi has recorded more new COVID-19 cases per capita than any other state, with around 127 new cases per 100,000, according to an analysis of data by The New York Times.

The wave of infections in Mississippi has put state health services at breaking point, with 93% of the state's ICU beds in use and 63% occupied by COVID-19 patients, according to data from the Department of Health and Human Services.

The state also has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the country, with about 37% of the population fully vaccinated, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

To James’ points…. Many unvaccinated hold a PhD. Education has very little to do with intelligence. Within the UFT membership, it is forced vax vs freedom of choice. Can’t change the union from within because we can’t agree on what that change should be. Pay for membership or don’t is a choice those forced to vaccinate can make. So can their vaccinated allies.

Freedom haters so desperately wanted to blame Republicans for being anti vax. Then as rebuttal when it’s pointed out that in NYC, it’s democrats, mostly nonwhites who won’t get vaccinated the same people blaming republicans say we’re desperate to blame black and brown people. Uh noooo. We’re not looking to blame anyone. You are. We’re using data to prove you’re wrong. In nyc unvaxed republicans are the minority of the unvaxed. Check the zip code rates. That data speaks for itself. Now point your fingers and scream RACIST like you always do. But know “racist” now means “fine citizen” thanks to all you liberals using it willy nilly.

Anonymous said...

@11:08 yeah, they all feel that way until they're in the ICU, and they're trying to ask the doctor for the vaccine, while he tells them it's too late, and the family is busy begging for funds on GoFundMe while saying 'don't judge him, he would want you all to know, to please vaccinate".

Anonymous said...

"Freedom haters so desperately wanted to blame Republicans for being anti vax. Then as rebuttal when it’s pointed out that in NYC, it’s democrats, mostly nonwhites who won’t get vaccinated"

You're the freedom hater. The freedom to be free from the disease. If you can't understand the stats that show that overall more minorities and white Liberals, than white Republicans are vaccinated, then maybe you should have someone explain it to you. You are Exhibit A for education doesn't translate to intelligence.

Anonymous said...

Hey everybody guess what in Alternate Reality La La Land, it's not *really* Republicans who are goings nuts over vaccinations and mask mandates. It's everybody else. And for the icing on the cake "racist" now has a new meaning 'fine citizen".

Don't vaccinate, but don't expect others to fight your battles regarding the mandates. That's YOUR problem and I'm loving it. I already co-signed on a note to Mulgrew saying we fully support the mandate. Too bad, so sad.

Anonymous said...

11:14.. lowest incomes have the lowest rates. class needs to be a factor in how we approach this. also, Whites make up a much larger percentage of the population. the 50% of unvaccinated White new yorkers, are a larger amount than the 60% of unvaccinated Black new yorkers. Unvaccinated Whites are also polled as being much less willing to eventually get the vaccine. and. for what it's worth, which ain't much, they tend to vote Republican.
Becoming overly tired of seeing Black new yorkers being used to absolve one's self of possibly being seen as prejudiced (oh the fear!) and also being used as a scapegoat to avoid class issues.

Anonymous said...

I've seen a helluva lot of whining and finger-pointing, but what do you anti-mandates, fake freedom lovers want out of the negotiations? James has asked several times and other than talking about pulling dues which will be a moot point if you lose your jobs, what is it that you are asking for? It's a given that you don't want a vaccine mandate.

As someone who is vaccinated I ask Mulgrew to support the mandate and no remote option solely for the unvaccinated.

If there is to be a remote option it should be on a seniority basis, or as before, based on medical reasons.

In-person teachers should not be tasked with supervising the remote teachers' in-person students, or setting up their bulletin boards and if we must set up the boards, it should be per session.

If negotiations settle on vax or test, it should not be mandatory for vaccinated teachers to provide supervision while the unvaccinated go and get their tests (if it's going to be done on school time), although that will likely be coverage pay.

Teachers are not held responsible, during an observation, for students not wearing a mask. Someone asked about Danielson, and yes, they can add that under "respectful classroom" or whatever.

"On Saturday the state recorded 21,683 new cases of COVID-19, the state's highest one-day total since the start of the pandemic, the AP said.

Despite the rise in case activity, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed an executive order this weekend banning schools from issuing mask mandates. In the mandate, DeSantis said it is unclear from the science if masks protect children from the virus and said it is a parent's choice to determine if a student should be masked."

For the teacher with young children- I remember if a teacher came down with chicken pox, the teacher got to stay home and not charge any sick days. No one wanted a teacher with no sick days coming in and infecting everyone. Perhaps this could be done if a household member has a positive covid test.

As far as the original article. I got infected and brought covid home. My husband ended up in the ICU 2 times (thankfully no ventilator). He came home weak as a baby. He's better, but nowhere near where he was before covid. No one wants this disease or to bring it home.

I'll explain it

Because besides the gov historically screwing blacks they have also screwed the white poor.

The government has always looked out for the wealthy...who could buy their way out of fighting in wars? the wealthy. Who can buy the best lawyers when needing protection-the wealthy

How can the Kennedy's Cuomos, other families get away with crimes that the common folk would be arrested and jailed for?? Because they are wealthy

Let's add in common sense-Feb 2020-CDC says "common people don't need to wear a mask"

We know that was drum roll...A LIE!

So why do some whites not drink the coolaid? because they or their older relatives have been fucked because they were poor/working class.

Working class people of all races have been screwed by the wealthy for years. Hearing Dr's and politicians sound like stepford wives does NOT promote trust!

The reason Fauci stated we'll get through this by Fall 2022 is because will need to see the results of vaccination along with all the respitory issues that go along with the Fall, Winter and Spring. They don't know what will happen. New strains can develop in which the vaccine cannot fight.

I KNOW very well and agree with you that poor/working class folks are actually in the same boat as blacks, etc BUT some just don't want to see it or believe it. Wealth looks out for wealth. The unwoke don't or won't see this. Some poor/working class white folks drink the kool aid of the ultra wealthy (1%) because they look like them. Trump didn't start this "big pharma bad, govt misleading" sh^t. Black folks have been yelling screaming burning marching, etc about this for centuries. I can go on and on but there is no need. These trumpsters are actually late to the soiree. The wealthy are pretty smart in one sense: they use blacks as the boogeyman and some poor whites drink that kool-aid hence the division. It shouldn't be black vs white but it is. Until the unwoken realizes that they are being pacified, the madness will continue.
What would happen if all working class joined black folks demand for rights? The wealthy would shit their pants.
As for the mask, when new information is available, don't you think we should change protocols? If this were not true, we'd still be in the dark ages.

Israel news:

As of August 21, the Health Ministry recorded 215.9 severe COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people among the unvaccinated over the age of 60, compared to 21 per 100,000 people among those who had received two doses of the Pfizer vaccine. This makes unvaccinated older people more than 10 times as likely to experience a severe case as their immunized counterparts.

Around 1.5 million Israelis have already received a third booster shot, which a recent Maccabi Healthcare Services study found was 86 percent effective in preventing COVID-19 infection among people 60 and older.

"The third shot is highly effective both against infection and serious illness,” Anat Ekka Zohar, the head of Maccabi’s Quality, Research and Digital Health Division, said last week, urging anyone eligible to get vaccinated.

"The vaccine’s effectiveness is proving itself against the delta variant and is the solution for curbing widespread infection,” she added. Further data and analysis confirmed the booster shot significantly lowers infections and serious cases.

You just don't get to work at certain places or go to school, like it's always been unless you have a medical accommodation. Coming soon to a district near you:

"We have mandates in many places, in schools, particularly public schools, that if in fact, you want a child to come in — we've done this for decades and decades — requiring polio, measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis [vaccines.] So this would not be something new, requiring vaccinations for children to come to school," he continued.

Fauci was responding to a question about a public school district in Culver City, Calif., mandating vaccines not only for staff but also the students. NPR reported that the Los Angeles County school district is believed to be the first in the country to take such a move. Students must provide proof of vaccination by Nov. 19.

"Those challenging the government mandates are likely to invoke their rights under the First, Fifth, and Fourteenth Amendments, which protect speech, religion, and a right not to "be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law." Their view ends up as a snapshot of themselves; nonetheless, rights can be limited if a person is endangering another.
It's a sentiment that came up in the 1905 Supreme Court decision in the case Jacobson v. Massachusetts. The court ruled against a man who had refused to be vaccinated against smallpox, stating: "Real liberty for all could not exist under the operation of a principle which recognizes the right of each individual person to use his own (liberty), whether in respect of his person or his property, regardless of the injury that may be done to others." That same principle was apparent when Justice Amy Coney Barrett, who is thought to be a strong rights-advocate, left standing Indiana University's vaccine mandate."

"The same reasoning applies to vaccine mandates. The Supreme Court explicitly upheld vaccine mandates against deadly diseases in Jacobson, where it explained: "the rights of the individual in respect of his liberty may at times, under the pressure of great dangers, be subjected to such restraint, to be enforced by reasonable regulations, as the safety of the general public may demand." We live in a country of ordered liberty, not individual autonomy that paves the way to the deaths of others. In short, it is not the right of every American citizen to catch and transmit a potentially fatal infection."

Anonymous said...

@9:55 you said "Why did Pharma insist on zero liability?...ask yourself!"

So I asked myself and this is what I found. This was decided in a Supreme Court case in 2011 (the article is from 2018):

"The United States Supreme Court reached a decision recently, concluding that federal law protects vaccine makers from product-liability lawsuits that are filed in state courts and seek damages for injuries or death attributed to a vaccine.

In the 57-page opinion written by Justice Antonin Scalia, the Supreme Court explained that the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986 (NCVIA or Act) preempts all design-defect claims against vaccine manufacturers brought by plaintiffs seeking compensation for injury or death caused by a vaccine’s side effects."

One of the rationales for the Supreme Court’s decision came from the fact that “vaccine manufacturers fund from their sales an informal, efficient compensation program for vaccine injuries. In exchange, they avoid costly tort litigation and the occasional disproportionate jury verdict.”

After the ruling, American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) president O. Marion Burton applauded the Supreme Court’s decision in a statement. Oftentime people will ask "if you're vaccinated and at low risk of infection, why do you care if we're vaccinated".

This article is one reason why people are concerned. Resources that are being unnecessarily depleted. It's not like people are not getting sick for the usual things for which there are no vaccines, aging, children and adults who have asthma issues, organ failures, injuries, and of course children for which there is no vaccine available.

Rather than address teacher concerns, the UFT leadership will filibuster meetings with meaningless Resolutions.

But first Mulgrew will say “Ladies and gentlemen the national scene… I do t know what to say.”

* the national scene, the international scene, the local scene, “it’s a mess”

Then phone calls :

After allowing each caller to say the customary: Thank you Michael for all you do.”

Then they’ll censor tough questions and issues and allow:

“Can you give us an update on the buyout?”

“My situation is unique and can you find someone to help help me.”

“ I’d like to propose a resolution for Left Handed lives matter.”

Then at least four District 75 questions.

If a tough question sneaks through, members will get “ill put that on my list when I talk to the chancellor .”

Then “Michael we have time for one more question.

“Michael can you please give us an update on Teachers choice.”
Same nonsense . Same union. Different meeting…

Can someone please refute this ? It makes my head hurt because CNN didn’t say this.

Notice how this raw data contrasts so glaringly with the unhinged fear mongering exhibited by the herd mentality. We have about 1 million students in DOE schools. So if we opened right now, the data shows that perhaps 20 kids might be hospitalized. Am I missing something here?

https://www.forbes.com/sites/jemimamcevoy/2021/08/04/covid-cases-among-children-jumped-84-last-week-here-are-the-states-where-hospitalizations-are-increasing/?sh=516f3fc13be9

As there is no regularly updated, comprehensive data on child Covid-19 cases available, it’s unclear whether the rise in hospitalizations is occuring nationwide. The last report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in early June, found hospitalization rates among children peaked at 2.1 per 100,000 in January. Meanwhile, the American Academy of Pediatrics (which acknowledges it is missing data from some states) reports the number of hospitalizations has remained steady throughout the pandemic, with children accounting for between 1.3% and 3.5% of hospitalizations, depending on the state. Overall, the risk of death and hospitalization among children who contract Covid-19 remains low. Just over 520 children have died from Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic (0.08% of the U.S.’s 612,000 total deaths) and only around 0.01% recorded cases result in death. However, the CDC highlights it is still possible for children to suffer from severe disease as it “occurs in all age groups.”

https://www.forbes.com/sites/jemimamcevoy/2021/08/16/children-now-nearly-1-in-5-new-covid-cases-though-hospitalization-still-uncommon/?sh=722f255e5d7c

Hospitalization and death from Covid-19 remains “uncommon” among children, the pediatrics group highlighted, with between 0.00% and 0.03% of all infections ending in death in the states that reported virus-related deaths by age.

Also when i see unmasked children(not babies, but maybe age 10?)with parents indoors unmasked, why should we vax?obviously parents do not care.the rule is vaxxed can be without a mask.obviously the kid wasnt vaxxed, in violation of the law, but hey, the unvaxxed maskers are the spreaders?gmafb! Breezy Point checked in with an astonishing 15.61% 7-day positivity rate, with 27 new cases identified between Aug. 19-25. Ironically, the area has high vaccination rates; 89% of its 3,393 residents have had at least one dose, and 82% of the populace is fully vaccinated.

Its very easy for James Eterno to call for mask mandates. He is retired and doesn't have to deal with wearing a mask all day long in the heat and in a stuffy room. He doesn't have to fight with kids to pull up their mask or to put one on. He wont have to deal with angry admins who will surely use the mandate as a way to further harass and intimidate you if you should have one student not in compliance.
No, Eterno just sits on his duff all day and acts as the king of his blog.

The poster @ 6:28 is not a liberal. She's being the usual ass which is why she's not to be taken seriously on anything. She's hardly an upper middle class Liberal. It's her latest roundabout way of blaming black and brown people again. She's been doing that for weeks and her M.O. is so lame and tiresome.

First she was pretending to care so much about them, and now she's just calling for them to be coerced or whatever. Calling for them to beaten with sticks is her sick idea of satire. It's just her way of hiding behind other people hoping that if everyone just rallies around others, then Republicans won't have to contend with a mandate and vaccinate. That's her goal.

"Chief state school officers in Iowa, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Utah received letters today from the OCR questioning the states’ decisions to not mandate masks in schools. The Education Department maintains that mask-mandate bans discriminate against students with disabilities who are at heightened risk for severe illness from COVID-19 by preventing them from safely accessing in-person education.

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona says that not mandating masks may put students with underlying medical conditions and disabilities at particular risk.

“It’s simply unacceptable that state leaders are putting politics over the health and education of the students they took an oath to serve. The Department will fight to protect every student’s right to access in-person learning safely and the rights of local educators to put in place policies that allow all students to return to the classroom full-time in-person safely this fall,” Cardona said in a statement."

"The department has yet to open investigations in Florida, Texas, Arkansas, or Arizona because masking bans in those states are enforced as a result of court orders or other state actions. However, the Education Department says that it will take action if needed if leaders in those states prevent universal indoor masking in schools."

"How an after-school program achieved a high vaccination rate in a Black neighborhood where most young adults are unvaccinated"

And they achieved it without beating them over the head with sticks like some are suggesting. That's why people like that should never be in charge of anything. It's a start and maybe a model for other places:

Perry Stein
Sun, August 29, 2021, 8:08 PM
WASHINGTON - William Pitts was one of the first on staff to be vaccinated.

"I didn't have much trust in the medical establishment," Pitt said.

The program ultimately mandated vaccination for all 18 employees of Life Pieces To Masterpieces. Today, everyone there is vaccinated. The more than a dozen volunteers who interact with students are also vaccinated. So are the eight teens and college students involved with the program. More than 60 percent of parents with children in the program said everyone eligible in their households is vaccinated, too.

In a slice of the nation's capital with a vaccination rate below 30 percent for eligible residents younger than 40, the figures are a success."

And ones that Mary Brown, founder of Life pieces to Masterpieces, worked hard to get.

Brown said that although she understands the often complicated reasons vaccination rates in the District of Columbia's Black neighborhoods are so much lower than in other areas, she was determined to have a different outcome for her program. "These kids have been through hell," Brown said. "I am not letting anyone near these children who is not vaccinated."

"Leon County Circuit Judge John Cooper dealt the final blow of the week when he ruled Friday that school districts can enforce temporary mask mandates to contain the spread of COVID -19 and, to the surprise of the defendants, he used their own argument again them.

Exception to parental rights: In a verbal ruling from the bench, Cooper concluded that the governor and his legal team failed to properly read the Parents’ Bill of Rights, which they used as the foundation for their argument that parents, not schools, should decide whether children must wear facial coverings. The judge said they overlooked a critical paragraph in the new law: The one that allows school districts to make an exception when a requirement “is reasonable and necessary to achieve a compelling state interest.”

On Martin Kulldorff:

"The controversial proposal was published by a right-leaning American thinktank, the American Institute for Economic Research. It was drawn up by three researchers – Dr Sunetra Gupta of Oxford University, Dr Jay Bhattacharya of Stanford University, and Kulldorff – and has garnered thousands of signatures from health professionals.

However, on 9 October, Sky News revealed that many of the “medical” signatories of the open letter were homeopaths, therapists or used obviously fake names, such as Dr Johnny Bananas and Dr Person Fakename, leading to accusations that the total number exaggerated the scale of scientific support.

The letter calls for those in higher-risk groups, including older people, to engage in shielding, while those in the least danger should “immediately be allowed to resume life as normal”.

However, other scientists have raised serious concerns over the core premise of the open letter, pointing to a lack of evidence that lasting immunity can be achieved, the practical difficulties in identifying all those who are vulnerable and the practicalities of shielding as well emerging cases of “long Covid”, which can affect otherwise healthy and sometimes young people who contract the virus."

"What will it take for the American majority to stop being hijacked by the bad-faith politics of an increasingly radicalized GOP that will stop at nothing to promote death and achieve minority rule?

Most of us in this country, who have chosen life during a pandemic, are asked to coddle the unhinged temper tantrums and violent extremism of a conservative base that continues supporting the Jan. 6 violent insurrection and attacking our voting rights, and is willing to sacrifice our children as canaries in the COVID coalmine to fuel their endless culture war during a pandemic that has killed over 600,000 Americans."

"You can’t “win over” these folks anymore. They are too far over the bend to get brought back around by Hillbilly Elegies, FDA vaccine approvals, sympathetic profiles of voters in rust belt diners, or town halls with undecided voters. Facts, common sense, and good-naturedness will not sway their fragile, terrified hearts."

Enough coddling. It’s time to say enough is enough.

"It’s too late to convince people determined to believe otherwise that the pandemic is real, deadly, and requires them to wear masks and take vaccines. It’s been nearly two years. We could have reopened safely by now, saved thousands of lives, and protected our front-line workers if we simply followed social distancing and masking.

Instead, a radicalized minority enabled by demagogic governors continues to choose death, which Republicans are trying, insanely, to rebrand as “freedom.”

"That minority may have a right to choose death, but they certainly don’t have a right to infect us with their virus by coming to work, to sporting events and into our children’s schools."

Unlike the fabricated gurney story above, this is a real gurney story:

"The hospital closest to our home had 82 patients working their way through the ER system there, with projected wait times of 3 to 12 hours. The main hospital about 30 minutes away also stated that they could not guarantee that anyone would see her within 4 to 6 hours, even though they acknowledged that her situation sounded pretty serious."

"In both cases, the hospital staff indicated that this terrible situation was mainly a function of unvaccinated people arriving at the emergency room with COVID symptoms."

"Karen then sat in a waiting room chair for almost 5 hours with a sick bag, all alone, until she was placed on a gurney in a hallway"

One of the argument he uses against the passport is that we have "freedom of movement". Since when? We need passports, and visas.

This one is a doozy "“Prior COVID disease (many working class) provides better immunity than vaccines (many professionals), so vaccine mandates are not only scientific nonsense, they are also discriminatory and unethical,” HUH? Rich people don't get COVID? OK!

His version of the Big Lie "people who have had COVID already have significantly more protection from the virus than people who’ve been vaccinated. Meanwhile, people who’ve not had COVID and choose to not get vaccinated may or may not be making an unwise decision. But if they are, they are principally putting only themselves at risk.
