MULGREW'S BACK TO SCHOOL EMAIL: UFT ASKED FOR REMOTE TEMPORARILY BUT ADAMS SAID NO SO GOOD LUCK

Dear _______,

Omicron has had a major impact on our city this holiday, and many of us New Yorkers have already struggled with this variant. We advised the new mayor that it would be safest to allow our school system to go remote temporarily until we could get a handle on the staffing challenges that each school is about to face as we return. However, he feels strongly that schools need to remain open.

We are determined to do everything in our power to keep our school communities safe when schools are open, and our work with the city and the DOE over the break has resulted in more expansive testing protocols and other new safety measures. Here are the final details that we were able to work out now that the new administration has taken office.

This letter is nothing new. Mulgrew is not trying hard enough as he has given Adams and DeBlasio have the upper hand since schools reopened in September. Remote learning has become a non-negotiable with the city belief that keeping schools open at all costs—is vital to the city as Mulgrew has become an incompetent and powerless ally with the Mayor.
NYC is an urban school district—and several large local urban school districts are going remote till for at least a couple of weeks. Apparently, Adams feels that’ better to be safe-then sorry’ is not part of his vocabulary—as he claims that schools are safe—without having adequate test data and shortage of test materials during this surge.
Mulgrew better do all his media stuff from inside schools starting tomorrow and remain in these so-called ‘safe school’ buildings supporting his members till 3:40.— not from home—or even his NYC office.
Good Luck, to all.

Because the new mayor said, "no", is that it UFT? You mean there is no plan B to counteract the "no"? This Covid variant is being painted to us as if it is the common cold. Come on UFT can you try to be a better advocate for your members?

I can't believe they think 20 percent is enough. The UFT and the DOE do nothing but betray us. A teacher told me many years ago to get out of the system because it was going to keep degenerating. How right she was.

So staff "may " report back on day 6 with this bull#### from Day 6 to Day 10, the staff member must consistently and correctly wear a well-fitting KN95 mask.

Slight correction:
The email from the DOE human resources today says
"At work, from Day 6 through Day 10, the positive teacher/school-based staff member must consistently and correctly wear a well-fitting higher-level face covering, SUCH AS [emphasis mine] a KN95 mask, which will be provided to staff if they do not have one, and they must distance themselves from others when they must remove their mask for eating or drinking during this time."

All I know is that 3% was enough to close schools but 30% is not.

I know of 1/3 of staff who already called in. They wanted everyone tested and the test results will not be back until tomorrow at the soonest. It will be such a shit show! And I have never been into scat porn. I called in and will get tested in the morning. I have not been absent in 4 years but have had quite enough.

The mayor is not competent. How much learning will be going on when all are focused on staying safe, not freezing or getting sick, snow tomorrow coming in the classrooms, students left with subs or dumped into other classrooms. Again how much learning will this produce?

How much more will this produce vs what students can learn in a virtual classroom?

The mayor I can say is not in the field of education but Mulgrew and the UFT are. They lead 188,000 members. They are failing to protect these members and failing to provide a safe work and learning environment. Mulgrew must be getting blackmailed. I cannot think of another logical reason why with neighborhoods like the one I teach in with a 38 Percent positive rate why he is not saying we will be online tomorrow to teach virtual entering buildings is not rational.

Anonymous said...

They can't require you to get tested. They can only request it.

Anonymous said...

"why he is not saying we will be online tomorrow to teach virtual entering buildings is not rational."

I don't know how much power you think Mulgrew has, but he does not have the authority to declare that teachers will teach remotely tomorrow, and everyone is just going to follow suit without any repercussions.

8:08 testing wasn't mandatory, but if that's what people thought, that explains the long, long lines at a testing site I went to.

Anonymous said...

And btw, I didn't stay at the site where there was a long, long line. I just turned around.

Anonymous said...

Testing is not Required, just encouraged. Everyone can report without a test result

At least Mayor Adams is being honest, he says over and over that the schools are the safest place for the kids- F the teachers and other staff who are in their 50's and 60's.

Vaccines do not work, mask do not work. It is common sense now. Either we stay home and respect the virus or we should just stop doing anything and never speak about it again.

So many pathetic cowards on this site. Don't you remember when this all started, the grocery workers, hospital staff, sanitation, etc all going to work? I think this site is infested with so many losers who do not represent the entire NYC teacher community.

Hey 10:38pm, except for hospital staff, they were dealing with mostly adults and early on people were limited in a store. Teachers are now dealing with small rooms, bad air, lots of kids (mostly vaxxed) and a variant that spreads much faster. Big difference. And, most teachers aren’t asking for forever, but for a couple of weeks to drop the numbers. Remote isn’t great, but there isn’t going to be a lot of learning with so many absent (teacher/students).

And 10:13pm, vaccines are working to keep Covid from killing you and hopefully keeping it mild. That’s a really big deal.

All the professions you mentioned didn’t have a remote option or they would’ve taken it. We have a remote option, what are you not understanding?! Dumbass.

He can be way more demanding and threatening. He’s a sellout / pussy instead.

And United for Change is doing the same, going to court.
So, even were they to defeat Unity we would have the same old thing. No job action, no sick-out, no action just more loud talk and legal paper push. Sound and Fury . . . Nothing.

Stand up for yourselves people.

Very Bad. More than 35 teachers out. The school was unable to get subs to come in. Classes are empty causing more students to miss assignments. Not nearly enough 95 masks for the staff. Was informed today that my son's principal has Covid 19 and she will be out for the next 5-7 days. Had one student in my class say his brother and sister have covid, but there were not enough tests for him and his dad. I was cursed out during outreach by a mother who stated, "Why don't you care about your students' safety and close school." I tried to explain that I do not have the power to close schools, but got nowhere.

I thought there was supposed to be a deep cleaning of my classrooms during the break!!!! Classrooms are all the same as I left them before the holiday break. Crumbs and paper still on the floor.

11;27 he should be more threatening and demanding. You have no clue how demanding or loudmouth he is in discussions. But still thats another thing entirely. He doesnt have the authority to placd teachers on remote instruction at the drop of the hat, especially while the students are still in school. Thats just nuts.

We received notification that ventilation purifier filters would be changed over the break for our protection.
We were told by our union teachers would receive 2 at home rapid cover tests for our protection and the children's protection.
We were told by our union every staff member would be supplied with Kn95 medical grade masks for our protection.
We were told children experiencing cough and other cold like symptoms would be sent home for the protection of others.

None of the above has occurred in school today.
All of the above has occurred in school today.

Seems these protections are only available to those ask. (sometimes, if available)
If you don't ask, you won't be protected.

Why are teachers being put in a position where they must request protections in the workplace?
I don't feel safe when I have to grovel for things that I'm told are put in place for my protection and the protection of my kids.

Sometimes, administration does the best they can do. In this case, really not their call. What else can they do if buildings are not safe or equipped with promised safety protocols?

Can Mr. Mulgrew help us understand how we should continue to work under these conditions?
We need to stop pointing fingers at each other, it's __ fault or __ fault.

Bottom line is that our new Mayor and Chancellor guaranteed us these safety protocols to keep our schools open at any cost and are not able to guarantee or handle the extra large job that it is.

So now what?

This site while informative is filled in the comments section with the worst crybabies and sycophants I have ever seen. I’m so glad my school is not filled with the likes of these lazy scaredy-cats.

Agreed 7:53pm I feel so defeated. We always have to ask, request and wait to receive
masks and other protections. Even now with insanely high covid rates and
assurances of safety measures being in place they simply are not

KN95 masks-CDC recommends limiting the number of donnings for an N95 FFR to no more than five per device. A donning is when you take off and put back on the mask. So the UFT is approving us not taking the N95 masks for 7 hours so that it can be used for 5 days?
No water drinking, no lunch, nothing?

Should be 1 mask a day to allow for humane treatment and water drinking UFT.

Next the UFT will be saying that we shouldn't have a lunch or a drink for 7 hours.

If masks are to be reused supposed to be stored and rotated not use the same exact mask for 5 days. f reuse of respirators is necessary, an appropriate sequence for donning/doffing procedures should be used to prevent contamination, and training needs to address appropriate donning/doffing procedures. See www.cdc.gov/niosh/npptl/pdfs/PPE-Sequence-508.pdf.

Extended use or reuse of N95s:
In the event extended use or reuse of N95 FFRs becomes necessary, the same worker is permitted to extend use of or reuse the respirator, as long as the respirator maintains its structural and functional integrity and the filter material is not physically damaged, soiled, or contaminated (e.g., with blood, oil, paint).[7] Employers must address in their written RPPs the circumstances under which a disposable respirator will be considered contaminated and not available for extended use or reuse.

No training at all. The UFT "expert" is not looking at use in a urban school district that is overcrowded and with an out of control transmission rate.

The tester-one and only one came today and only tested a few students less than 20 percent because the school day was over. This is one way to keep covid numbers down.

Cheap motherfuckers. Got plenty to spend on no bid contracts and consultants. The Union is letting this happen. The trains are down and we are at 40 percent infection rate. The entire mess will implode anyway. Stay home. Fuck this bullshit. Let mildew and his goons babysit.

I thought Joe Biden was going to kill the virus not the economy?

I thought if you get the vaccine it's safe and effective you cannot get covid nor spread it?

I thought masks worked, oh yea PEDO CNN even admitted cloth masks don't work.

The flu never dissapeared, its back!!!!

Everything has been a lie wake up!!!

Everyone I talk to with 3 jabs who got it says it's very mild. So, it hasn't all been a lie. Just tougher road. Imagine all the fools on this blog had they been alive in the Civil War. They would've thrown in the towel after Bull Run. Cowards and hysterical babies. No guts. No real men left. No courage.
