UNITY SAYS "#wedothe work" -- WHAT DOES UNITY ACTUALLY DO?

The UFT election season is here so Michael Mulgrew's Unity Caucus is out there with a hashtag saying, "#wedothework."

Here is a response from a United for Change supporter saying what Unity really does.

We do the work of...
  • pretending we're doing the work.
  • handing out givebacks.
  • rolling over and playing dead while John King & NYSED demoralize us with Danielson APPR ratings.
  • selling off retiree healthcare to for-profit insurance companies.
  • lobbying against universal healthcare.
  • letting new teachers be tortured with four years of probation.
  • negotiating wage increases that don't keep pace with inflation.
  • ignoring our membership.
  • letting teachers work in unsafe, Covid-filled buildings
  • getting rid of seniority school transfers.
  • providing patronage jobs to Mulgrew's sycophants.
  • firing UFT phone staffers and replacing them with Salesforce™ call-center-script-readers.
  • quashing debate at Delegate Assemblies.
  • supporting mayoral control (and saying that we don't).
  • hiring lawyers and consultants who have never stepped foot in a public school classroom.
  • doing whatever (arbitrator) Marty Scheinman tells us.
  • bending over and getting f***ed by every politician who says they'll give us "a seat at the table."
  • telling you that everything Mulgrew does (including bending over and...) is the greatest victory ever.

I'm collecting signatures for United for Change. The vas majority of the teachers at my school hate Mulgrew and by default, hate Unity. They have been very happy to see that there is a person running against him. All that Unity propaganda is not working for most teachers in the DOE. The covid debacle has also reinforced the disdain for Mulgrew/Unity. Add in the retirees, and you have a whole lotta people that are willing to vote Mulgrew out.

Fu*king us over and not supporting. D75 teachers with our onerous paperwork (clerical bull$hit) which increases weekly

“doing whatever (arbitrator) Marty Scheinman tells us.“

There is your opening, Camille. A lot has changed since the summer of 2021. We know that vax mandates don’t stop the spread. We know COVID is about to be endemic. It’s ok to admit that the mandates were a mistake. Don’t worry about what Randi Weingarten might say like Mulgrew did. It’s obvious that Mulgrew did not represent all of the UFT.

Fight for all union members including the ones that were coerced into compliance !

I don't think Camille wants to lead the anti vaxxers.

In my opinion, the most important aspect of United for Change is their commitment to democracy and openness in our union. I agree with the vaccine mandate, and am gratified the majority of teachers support it. The anti vaxers are on the fringe as evidenced by the speakers in their dc rally equating Anne Frank's struggles in a concentration camp with fighting a vaccine mandate . How offensive!
Good luck Camille!

358. what do the majority of union members actually think of the mandate? you may not be representative of how most people feel about it, and for those of us that are still working and are still union members, the mandate is over and done. we cant be magically unvaxxed now. we have other conditions to fight for as well.

Add in lying by telling us the same BS as the city that the KN95 masks from China are to be used up to 5 days when it clearly states on the packages disposible not designed to be reused.
Unity lies and claims their experts said so. Who is this expert?

James stop publishing messages with language like this.
It is embarrassing to those of us who are professional educators, and probably will cost lots of votes.
It certainly does not look like a comment that was moderated.

Thanks for avoiding the facts I shared and resorting to name calling. You can be vaccinated and anti-mandate. I think we cleared that up last summer. The pro-mandaters are the minority. Most people don’t want to force medical procedures on others.

I, and over 25% of the UFT, did not want or need the jab for a variety of valid reasons. We were coerced into compliance like thousands of other municipal workers. Camille has a chance to undo the damage that Mulgrew and DeBlasio has caused. If she wants the support of the coerced 25%, she needs to reconsider the mandates and admit they were a failure to stop the spread. And to support a mandate for kids is even more unconscionable.

Omicron has particularly nullified the need for mandates.

The Vax Mandate: Every individual should have a right to choose their own individual preference or choice or what ever you want to call it to be vaccinated or not. This comes with the understanding of that you may risk your life if you choose to not vaccinate and that you may infect others..
But, the vaccinated can infect others.
So, nothing makes sense.
We are in uncharted territory, the blame game doesn't hold true.
Vaccine's should not be a condition to be employed in public schools.

UFC not going to be the place for anti vaxxers. I think that is fairly obvious. Vote for Mulgrew pal. You have lots in common.

9:11pm.. Vote for Mulgrew? He clearly supports mandates. Why would the coerced vote for him?

Anonymous said...

If you idiots would listen, we could be pretty much out of the covid mess.

Omicron wave is a wake-up call about need to vaccinate world, experts say
Senior U.S. administration officials, health experts and Democrats warn that low-income nations remain vulnerable and that the risk of another variant will remain elevated as long as billions are unvaccinated.

why don't you anti-vaxers form a slate and see how many votes you get? Otherwise your 25%is a myth. Put your petitions where your mouth is.

The low income world of unvaxxed is faring far better than the countries like us who are heavily vaxxed.

So, let’s get rid of all the required vaccine immunizations that are required for students to attend NYC schools. Do parents have the right to choose and go to court? (Only medical notes can lead to exemptions—accordingly to the NYSE website).
If you were living back in the late 1800’s—‘don’t give me that smallpox shot—I’ll take my chances’.
If the polio vaccine was available in the early 1900’s—would FDR have said—‘No, I’ll take a pass.’
And speaking of passing—hoping this big Covid mess finally passes through by Spring and there are no other dangerous variants out there again. From the get go, science is doing the best they can as Covid has been perplexing .
But in the meantime, get yourself better protection —stop whining and get vaxxed—mandate or no mandate.
This has nothing to do with the poor performance of Mulgrew as UFT President over the past 12 years.

I think it is disingenuous to compare vaccines from the 1800's and 1900's to now. It is so obvious that politics, power and wealth are driving everything CoVid in the US. The mandates have little to do with securing anyone's health or well being.

Simple questions we should ask ourselves when comparing pandemics with CoVid: With the other pandemics, did they have prophylaxis protocols as we do for CoVid? Did they have treatments that were hidden, banned or denied to patients as we do for CoVid? Did they have the access to testing? Did the general public have access to information and treatments? How many doses of each vaccine were mandated? Were politics, power and money driving the narrative of those pandemics?

There are also millions of unhealthy Americans leading incredibly unhealthy lifestyles, by choice. I do not think this was the case during the previous pandemics.

Covid cannot be compared to smallpox.it has a high survival rate for most.early treatments are suppressed.etc...smallpox was very different.and this job does not stop transmission, so u can't use the rationale of protecting others.
Go ahead, lock the kids out of everywhere, make businesses fail, but spread it in school anyway....great policies!

1041, the reason why the mandate was such a contentious issue is because going into the school year, over 25% of teachers were unvaxxed. Mulgrew failed to represent over a quarter of the UFT whereas as the police and firefighters union leaders put up much more of a fight and continue to do so. Mulgrew capitulated to the Mayor, Randi Weingarten and the corporate interests of Big Pharma.

Since when do liberals carry water for Big Pharma?

Will Camille actually represent and fight for the rights of all UFT members so we can be United for Change ?

To get a scope of the antivaxxers one just needs to look at a story of a man who was first on the list to received a transplanted heart. However this man has been taken off the list now because he was unvaccinated and refused to get the shot.

So, the story is a man who needs a life saving heart transplant refusing the heart transplant simply because he does not want to get the vaccine shot.

The interesting question lies. Why would this man refuse the vaccine shot? Is he afraid to die? Well, for a man who will need a heart transplant surely means if he does not get it he will die.

So, the vaccine anti movement is not for life saving but rather an insane notion of not being told what to do. This case highlights the insanity of people with this virus and with the vaccine. As they say one cannot make this crap up.

I think you are missing the point. If you are on your deathbed, you are not worried about COVID at that point. The immediate concern is having a functioning heart. Also, please stop conflating anti vaxxers with people who oppose mandates. I thought we figured that out last summer.

Anonymous said...

To withhold medical treatment from someone who doesn’t want an experimental vaccine is criminal. What happened to the Hippocratic Oath?

Anonymous said...

I know this whole notion of denying the man the heart sounds ruthless on the surface but why waste the heart on someone who could die easier than someone who would have a less chance of dying? I understand why they denied him the heart transplant. Hospitals do this all the time. If they have a list of people who need a heart transplant, they will give it to the healthiest person. This guy clearly does not care about his life. If he did he would have gotten the vax. Also, if you get a heart transplant, you are automatically imuno compromised so if he got Covid, he has a much higher chance of dying than a vaxed person who got the heart. Think about it before making judgements.

But the shot won't help him.it may even cause him myocarditis, blood clots, and a stroke! On top of his weak condition.if the shot would save him, I would agree.but since it won't, this is a political case to scare others into taking the shot.so sad and tragic.sad state of medicine.syay out of the hospital.die on your own terms.it is very warped and scary.

The Eternos need to walk faster to keep up with all the backtracking. Even Scott Gottlieb is anti-mandate now !
You know it’s bad when a Pfizer board member is anti-mandate before you are !

Dr. Scott Gottlieb, former director of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and current board member at Pfizer, said that declining COVID-19 cases should signal to policymakers that it is time to lift more pandemic-related restrictions.

“I think certainly on the east coast where you see cases declining dramatically we need to be willing to lean in and do that very soon I think as conditions improve we have to be willing to relax some of these measures with the same speed that we put them in place,” he told “The Squawk Box” in a Monday interview when asked about whether mask mandates should be dropped.

Gottlieb said that “a lot of the acrimony” in the United States stems from a lack of “clear goalposts” about when some of the measures will end.

The former FDA commissioner also cited the Connecticut government’s recent decision to rescind vaccine mandates for state workers as a policy that other policymakers should adopt in the near future as COVID-19 cases decline nationwide.

“The only way to get compliance from people and get accommodation [is] if we demonstrate the ability to withdraw these [mandates] in the same manner in which we put them in,” Gottlieb added.

SO why was he even considered for the heart. His condition doesn't seem conducive to receive a heart transplant, but I know nothing about medicine.
