NYC STUDENT WALKOUT SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY; SCHOOL NOT SAFEST PLACE FOR KIDS TO BE

The students in NYC are doing more than the UFT to protest the Mayor's dangerous fantasyland policies on schools during the huge Omicron wave.

When politicians and their media mouthpieces blabber on about how school is the safest place for kids, show them this pie chart from the Illinois Department of Public Health on potential exposure locations:

School was 42.6% on this list and own home was .938%. The Chicago teachers are quite intelligent and they remain on strike as they refuse to report to these unsafe schools but they have been locked out of their online classrooms by the Mayor. The strike is not legal but they put their health and the health of the students above all else. They had a car caravan protest today. One of the coolest slogans: "Until cases decline, class is online."

A report from Chicago

In-person learning amid omicron: At one NYC high school, "hundreds of students were sent to the auditorium after about 50 teachers called out sick." At another, "just five out of 100 seniors showed up."

Air temp at noon tomorrow 18° winds @16 = real feel of near 0. Not the best day kids

MY PREDICTION: Hardly any kids will participate and there will be close to no media coverage. Kids would rather skip school and stay home instead of going out to protest. I do hope I am wrong though.

Just saw on the news, the head of the teachers' union in Chicago, Sharkey, called the mayor of Chicago "relentlessly stupid" for not listening to the teachers' union. There's a real union leader for you and a good name to match.
Also regarding tomorrow being a cold day, is it any less cold inside the schools with all the windows open?

Ny post put out an article about this. However they incorrectly stated it taking place Wednesday. Just poor reporting as always

It is well-known, and there is no arguing this, that 99.998% of children recover from the original covid. It is also known that Omicron is considerably less lethal. So to make the case that you are concerned about Children's health is asinine. And any rational thinking adult, who is not gas-lit by fear, sees right through that fake concern. And if you would just look around the country, where most every school system is up and running, and many without even mask-wearing, you would see that normal schooling can resume. Let's just be real here, most that frequent this blog are just lazy asses who want to stay home in their pajamas and get paid for doing nothing. Hopefully those that frequent this site are not representative of the vast majority of New York City teachers. At least not the ones in my circles.

7:44: I don't know where you are getting your information from, my nephews are still doing remote learning in South Carolina, so I don't know why you are saying things are up and running all over the country as normal.

Thank you, Miles. You nailed it. I really feel sorry for the MORE members that protested at Barclays. They continue to embarrass themselves. Most of them probably had Omicron already. They are truly exhibiting mass formation psychosis in action.

"Mandate that teachers post work online". Wasn't this already the plan? The plan was that if students quarantine for whatever reason teachers would be given time and PAY to post work and meet with students. Principals still want teachers to post work and meet with students but they don't want to to pay them. What are they doing with the money they were given for that?

The problem is…is that we give kids too much of a voice…I have kids home quarantined and the majority have not signed on to do any work at all. That’s how remote will go. Closing for a few weeks would be a crime. We’ll lose ‘em. Kids are just getting used to be being back at school. We HAVE to learn to live with this thing….and all teachers are vaccinated. I dont understand the fear.

Miles. Death is not the only factor we use to judge the danger of this virus. There are many long term effects to the body that come from catching Covid. That is our concern. That is what we wish to prevent as best we can. And we should use any form of mitigation we can, including the remote option.

855. We feel sorry for the kids that are home sick. We feel sorry for the staff in quarantine. We will fight to have a remote option for the families that are rightfully keeping their children home to do all they can to avoid getting Covid. We know the dangers from the long term effects. We will fight for them.

1.4 million cases in a day in this country. Nice job, Joe. Crushing it.

Is it not better to not get sick at all and have students and teachers safely working from home. I have more students failing this Semester than I had at any point during Remote Learning. We are also not giving NX grades. Parents and teachers are leaning something though. They are learning their mayor and the doe do not give a shit about them nor do they care about teachers. Many more students will have to repeat grades and classes next semester or during summer school. Please ask the mayor why my passing rates are so low. Do not even think of questioning teachers!!!!!!!!

Other states are also offering remote and even going remote.

Keep telling parents their kids are safe when they are unable to visit their kids in the hospital. I am 100% sure Adams would not even send his own kids. I have over 40 students that tested positive in my classes alone. All day long my e-mail dings with exposure letters.

Article in The Post today saying that the peak is over and we are downtrending now. So much for that student walkout.

I'm tired of people saying this is just like the flu. I had the flu once a long time ago and I remember it was so bad I could hardly move.
As for the kids failing, don't worry, the teachers will just give into their administrators as usual and pass them because all we ever do is feel sorry for the kids and say to them, well you are just ghetto kids, so we can't expect much from you. It sounds mean but that is what we are indirectly saying to them when we pass them for doing nothing.

Oh please. Both you and I know that nobody is repeating any grade. Lol. Silly goose.

How many children under 5 flooding NYC hospitals pediatric ward? How many so called parents giving their children fever reducers to circumvent temperature taking? How many schools do not have adequate ventilation? No windows in gyms and certain classrooms? Air purifiers burned out and not reported? How many parents refuse to give consent to have their child tested? How many refuse to get them vaccinated? Contrary to popular belief no this is NOT a babysitting service! This is abuse and neglect of your child. How are schools “safer” when they are a known breeding ground for Covid? Politics as usual.

How many schools are a breeding ground for Covid? How the hell are they safe? How many parents refuse to give consent to have their child tested for Covid and refuse to get them vaccinated? How many parents giving their children fever reducers to remain undetected? How many parents knowingly sending their kids to school sick? That abuse parents in case you didn’t know. Mandate testing for every student at least! Who the hell is your kid to come into school untested and unvaccinated and infect staff and students? Adequate ventilation does not exist all over the school. There are classrooms, auditoriums and gyms without windows. Air purifiers not big enough or burned out and not working. Students packed into auditoriums, gyms and doubled up classrooms because there are not enough teachers, subs, paras, sub paras. How about the parents coming in to help out?

12:50 yes - it does sound mean, and it is offensive and disgusting. It's certainly not only "ghetto kids" who are being passed throughout the city. I don't pass kids because they are "ghetto kids and I don't expect much". If I pass kids who are not totally deserving it's because it's the DOE and Admin who are incompetent and can't get their act together with all of their conflicting information.

But yeah..I do feel sorry for some of them who have a different teacher every week and wonder how they're going to pass the Regents. I prefer not to claim a higher moral ground and pile on. We had one incompetent sub would come in an give Regents level work to alternative assessment students who read on the 2nd grade level. It's a complete shit show and whenever I can give students the benefit of the doubt I do, and it's certainly not because of low expectations but rather understanding the current deplorable conditions.

Going remote would be awful. I’m sure people recall last year having live classes where 15 minutes into the class, maybe 3-4 kids were online and the second you start the listen, more kids pop on and you have to repeat everything you said.

Expectations are low in city schools…lower doe remote. Pop on for one minute, and you’re marked present remote. Hand in work from a month ago and you get credit because ‘hey, we can’t be demanding at this time. We have to be fair to the families.’

Kids are playing their parents to stay home.

We can’t lose kids…again. September was one of the hardest months I have had in the doe re-acquainting kids to a school routine.

Whoever posted that kids have too much of a voice is correct. Get up, get to school and participate. I questions asked.

We are all vaccinated. I’m boosted. I had covid. It was like a bad head cold, but I’m fine and it took a few days. Honestly, I have had stomach viruses which were a hundred times worse.

Here’s an idea. Stop being afraid of covid and get a good night’s sleep, exercise and eat protein and vegetables over bread, carbs and starches. Just a thought.

And maybe that auditorium had no windows or no window poles to open the windows. Were there were at least two large extra powerful air purifiers going? What as the location of the air purifiers? How far apart were the kids sitting next to each other? Anyone sitting on the stage? How many other rooms without windows in the school? Gyms? School caf? Classrooms? Hallways? Offices? Bathrooms? Count the air purifiers and see if they work or are turned on.
